'83 Cutlass Cruiser Build Thread

Been debating adding the vinyl woodgrain trim around the car once it's painted. Should I do it?

Still slowly sanding away on the roof.
The more I sand, the better it looks.
Except for those couple spots I sanded thru! lol
A few spots will need a swipe of filler yet, but overall I'm getting close to putting a fork in it.

My buddy caught a rock with the windshield on his daily driver so when the glass guy comes out we'll have him cut out my windshield and 1/4 glass too.
I could do it myself, but I'll gladly pay someone when it'd take me all day and it'll take them 30 minutes...

Blake,
There's a lot of real estate to cover on the roof. I kind of found a happy medium and cut a few corners, regrettably, but no crying over it now. Of course, you see what you've missed after the fact.

I know what you mean about having someone cut the glass out. The quarter windows did take a while. Fortunately, they came out without breaking 'em. The windshield was another story. I had already cracked it, so I didn't have to be that patient taking it out. I hope your glass guy is able to take it out without damaging it. My glass guy didn't want to take a chance, knowing he'd be liable.

Windshield is already cracked/chipped/pitted, so it's the least of my worries.
I'll be replacing it with one that has the embedded antenna, so I can shave the mast off the fender.
I will lose my 2001 Texas inspection sticker from the last time the car was registered before it went to the junkyard, though...
As long as he doesn't break the 1/4 glass, I'll be a happy camper!
Lindsay might still have an extra, so maybe I'll find out which one he has and have the guy cut that one out first just in case!

I hd cut mine all out, wasn't too bad, but then again the ribbon was all dried out and easy to cut. I went with the antenna in the windshield also, so much cleaner IMO. 😀

Actually, my quarter windows weren't that bad, considering. The ribbons were dried out on mine as well, which helped the removal process. There's nothing like a new windshield as far as clarity is concerned. I also went with the embedded antenna. .
It's so much cleaner looking than the having the mast poking out of your fender.
Again, having the right tools to remove the glass helps. like a long knife, but I used the wire and sharpened paint scraper method.
Somehow I think the windshield is more susceptible to cracking than the quarter glass. However, you still have to exercise caution.
I have one of those tools with the angle blade at the end and has the pull cable...they're virtually useless.

Have any of you guys ever polish scuffed glass? My driver side window is scuffed from having a bad window sweep and some foreign abrasive between the glass and sweep. Fortunately, it's not deeply gouged like they usually are.

Jack, I am in the same boat. I have been looking into getting the glass polished while its out. I know Eastwood and others sell kits for the DIY, not sure if I feel like fiddling with it, lol

Jim,
I know Eastwood carries the glass polishing kit and polish. I'm also a little reluctant about doing it. I have an extra glass, but it's not any better than this one.
I guess it means that I'll have to remove the glass again...or mask up the area around it. I suppose if I find a better one in the junkyard, I'll decide whether ti swap it out or not..

Polishing does look like a multi stage process, much like wet sanding. I think there's a few You tubes on the subject.

Sorry Blake if we are jacking your thread a bit.

Jack, my cousin was telling me he is going to have the glass for his 69 Cuda we are restoring polished by a local company (near Harrisburg PA). I am waiting to see if the do it and how it turns out/how much. The Cuda has some curved glass so we'll see if it ever happens.

Sorry Blake, I also didn't mean to "jack" your thread.

Jim, let me know how it goes with your cousins glass. I think finding good used driver side glass won't be easy. It's usually the driver side that's scratched and grooved. I might look into one of the Eastwood kits. Worse case scenario it comes out like crap and would need to be replaced anyway.

Don't worry about the hijack...
It's actually something I need to address with my wagon as well.
I kept the door glass from my Malibu when I parted it out, so I'll pick the best that I have available since I'm way too lazy to polish out the scratches...
