Re: '83 Regal LTD build *UPDATE 9/8*

Started mocking up the SPECTRE intake tonight. These things are not easy to get even on each side :blam:

Re: '83 Regal LTD build *UPDATE 9/14 PIC*

Ok...so I am ready to start the new engine. Had some issues with the fuel lines sealing and got them all leak free. I went to fire it up and it just turns over. I have power going into the the distributor. There is absolutely no spark. Everything is brand new (Accel billet distributor, coil, wires, battery )

We have a couple of thoughts, I am just looking to see if there are any other ideas.

-faulty ignition module
-faulty coil
Is there an easy, at home way, to test these :?:

Another thing that was a little confusing to us was the fact that I have the coil ground strap, plus there is a ground wire with an ilet crimped to it coming from the coil between the red and white wire :? I don't ever remember seeing a black ground wire coming from the coil like that.

We were also wondering if maybe the power wire could be losing power while turning it over :?: So I guess we need to test that as well

Let me know what y'all think 8)

Check the power wire to the distributor while cranking with an DVOM, it should read atleast 10 volts, if not, the spark may be so weak that it wont even show on your spark tester. To see if the problem is either the pickup coil or the ignition module, you can put a test light between the tach connection on the dizzy and the tach wire itself, then turn the motor over, and if the light is flashing, the pickup coil and module are good IIRC. If the light is just solid and doesnt flash, then it IS the pickup coil or module. The pickup can be tested with a DVOM aswell. Set it to ohm scale and connect the two terminals of the pickup coil to the two leads on the DVOM, you should get continuity. Then, while still on the ohm scale, connect one of the leads on the DVOM to either terminal on the pickup, and one to the distributor housing. You should get infinite resistance (no continuity). To have the ignition module tested, you need to take it to an auto parts store that does tests on them. They have a machine that they hook the module up to that tests the integrity of the circuits, so they'll tell you if its bad. I cant remember how to test the coil, but if the pickup and module are fine and your getting power and ground to the dist, then thats your problem. These tests were all done on a GM HEI distributor on the CCC system, but they should be the same for your distributor. Oh yeah, make sure you check the little button on the bottom of the coil that touches the rotor, make sure its making contact with the coil. Good luck!

Something simple that I have seen over looked a time or two, make sure you have the battery and tach wires going to the right terminal. I've seen some guys get in a hurry and hook them up backwards, just a thought, sometimes it happens.
