Hey guys long time reader new time member and need some direct help if possible please. My first major issue I need fixed is my wipers. On my monte it only has a low and a high speed setting. For years all worked fine when one day while it was on high setting and little magic smoke came out of the lever and that was when high setting stopped working and has never worked since. So I always just used low setting up until a month ago all was fine but now the low setting isn't working but when driving the other day I left the switch on the low setting and all the sudden it worked for a couple days. Now its not working again and have checked connections and fuse and all seems right. But its just not working. I should note that when its off and I turn it to the low setting you hear a click like a switch activating yet nothing happens. Also now the wiper fluid isn't coming out however you can hear the pump still working when you activate it. Any ideas?. Another big issue I ha e is the fuel gauge. All worked fine for years but one day when driving it surged all the way full and has never worked since. Its a pain calculating mileage and I'm sick of smelling gas in my car because I always have to keep two gallons on hand for when I frequently run out. Any ideas? I'm going to get battery and alternator tested now because I'm having headlamp issues now as well. All worked fine for years then I could only run low beams because when I would turn on my brights after about thirty seconds they would flicker on and off which is scary as heck when on a pitch black deer infested road. Sometimes the low beams won't work now even and I have to rock the lever for brights back and forth fast about ten times and then the lows will kick on.. Once again any ideas? I appreciate any knowledge given thanks guys. Its winter time so all of these issues are much more critical and need to be addressed ASAP for me and my passengers safety. Happy holidays and no its not for sale!! Lol

Are there any ways of testing the turn signal/ high beam combination switch? You all probably know, the one that is a total pain to get to in the steering column that retails for 175.00 at the local parts store. I'd hate to buy it if that's not it but it sure seems like with all the issues I'm having on that one lever the next thing in line is that pesky switch.. Anybody???

The contacts inside the switch sounds like the issue. By the sounds of it you need a switch. The gas gauge sounds like the float is stuck, might have to replace the sender. If your headlights are flickering it might be the switch, it has an internal circuit breaker that causes that to happen. Might be a short in the hi-beam circuit itself.

Wipers-I would start with a wiring diagram and do some trouble shooting with a multi meter. I think the wiper switch provides ground to different wires going to the wiper motor but I could confirm if I had the diagram. That would be the best way to test the wiper switch - see what it is supposed to be doing, then test to see if it is doing it.

Headlights - the flickering on and off sounds like the circuit breaker for the headlights is overloading, cutting the power to the lights, then cooling and resetting over and over again rapidly. On many cars the circuit breaker is built into the headlight switch. I'm not sure if that is true of your multi function switch. It's strange to me that by cycling the dimmer switch several times you can get it to stop doing it.

Fuel gauge - it sounds like a bad sending unit in the tank (float has sank). You can test it by disconnecting the sending unit wire at the tank. With the key on and the wire disconnected the guage should be all they way full. Now ground the wire (key still on) and the gauge should go to empty. If this is the case, the gauge is good and the sender in the tank is bad.

If you do decide to replace the multi function switch in the steering column, be picky about what you buy. I wouldnt put an auto parts grade aftermarket switch (Wells, Airtex, Standard Motor Products, BWD) in my car. Most of that stuff is China junk and changing that switch is not a small project for a novice. I would try to find a NOS switch or buy a Delco.

Hope this helps.
