a '71 442 rear axle will bolt in just like a any other 10 or 12 bolt from a gm "A" body car from 64-72. you will need special upper control arms. a '71 442 axle has bolt in axles, no "c" clips. and i believe the "71 was the first year for the 8.5" ring gear, in place of the 8.2" that chevy and pontiac were running.
Actually Oldsmobile used their own 8.5" 12 bolt cover, 10 bolt ring gear Type O axle. They are close to C type 8.5" in strength, but 67-69 use an axle bearing that is not submerged in gear oil. Gears and posi are more $$$ as well.

I am looking at about $1000 for 3.90 gears and a good clutch posi with shipping. My 70 has the better bearings and axles. It will be way stronger than the mighty 7.5". I patched my 7.5" with Yukon spider gears, better than the soft stock ones.
