this should be on the firewall. Somewhere between the distributor and the speedo cable.

In case you’re wondering why we’re going on about the tach filter ,they are known to go bad and the tach will read incorrectly. They are discontinued from GM,but I bypassed mine years ago and the tach worked fine for several years after that.

It would be really cool if someone could measure a working one, so you could replace the faulty part; it's either an inductive coil or a capacitor. I can't tell from the pics.

I have never used the filter and the tachs worked fine. The Pontiac tachs have a jumper on the back where you can change from 4-6-8 cylinders. I can't remember if the Chevy ones do the same.

THe Chevys are either 6 or 8 if I'm remembering, should dig out the parts bible to double check.

Yes you can tell the difference by the "redline" on the RPMS

Yes! This is on the firewall behind the distributor or close to it. The wire looks like it was spliced into like three times. I don't understand why that would happen or how... But from what I read, they are hard to come by. What do I do about replacing it with something that will work? Thank you!

Guy,
I understand the concept of bypassing something... but what I see is one wire going to a capacitor on the firewall... which is what I am assuming everyone is calling the filter. How would I go about bypassing something with one wire going to it? Just unplug it or am I missing something here in the mix. I can post pictures tomorrow if it helps what I am working with.

All I did was cut the wires at both ends of the filter,or capacitor, and connect them together.
The filters are pretty much junk when they start to fail, and no one has them.
