huh. wonder what's in that little black box that needs a ground. I always just thought that tach filter was a capacitor ("condenser") and nothing else.

the original one is grounded, it has a metal case bolted to the firewall.....🙂

I still do not have a working Tach.... weeks later and When I cut the filter out.. all the gauge did was surge more and still report MANY RPM's higher than what it should at a lobe of maybe 500 RPM idle, the tach is reading over 2,000 RPM. What should I check out next?

maybe the tach itself is bad. They sell replacement panels for them on ebay

Proper voltage and a clean ground on all components. Do you have a ground strap on the HEI coil?
I'm not sure if I have a ground strap? I do not know where to check the ground for the gauges for the car.. Is it under the cluster or is it under the dashboard? I know that the power source is good because I was able to test the signal going from the HEI. I might have to do what Turna said and replace the gauges.

I'm going to have to check the ground wire and the other wires and then I will replace the gauges. I'll keep an eye on them now online. Thanks!

There should be a ground wire on the 10mm screw that holds the dash in place under the hood release
