H body(like Bonneville) is more of a pain to work on than w body (like my Monte) 3800s. A few months ago I pulled a 3800 from my friends w body 2000 gp without getting under the car lol

In fact the last time I stabbed an engine in my Monte I swapped from one running sc 3800 to another in a few hrs.

While we're beating this particular dead horse ....

The kid who wanders into some forum talking about removing "all that smog crap" thereby liberating an epic street rod suffering within. Then for the zillionth time someone has to patiently walk him through the actual situation.

Meanwhile the few hot rodders left here in California won't even look at anything '76 or later. And once in a while some idiot pops up arguing the state should bring pre-'76 vehicles under smogcheck because the few hot rodders left alive run around without the proper equipment once in a while. Bring out the National Guard! It was this oddball dinnertime argument that resulted in The Terminator terminating the terminator, keeping G-bodies under smogcheck forever.

Just be glad that California hasn't mandated that all cars be converted over to electric or pedal power or something equally stupid. God help you if you want to operate a semi over there...

And it is simply a myth that smogcheck plays any significant role in controlling smog.

If someone somehow managed to invent the battery that no one knows how to make, I'd happily look into electric myself. As it stands, however ....

I don't have a position on diesel. Maybe they felt they had to do something about it because of the LA smog bowl, with all the traffic in and out of Long Beach for those monster boatloads of containers from China. These days the air around here is so clean you can smell a diesel coming a block away.

Here's a Fun Fact. If I got my grimy hands on one of those Olds 350 diesels, I could swap that fine baby into my G-body and turn up at smogcheck with it belching smoke, and they'd rubber stamp it and send me on my way. Wouldn't even need to take it to a Referee.

I've been tempted to do that just to blow smoke in their faces. Couldn't quite bring myself to do it. 😀
