Biggest mechanical pet peeve

I spoke with an engineer once about why they mix metric and SAE parts. He said that the engineers spec parts for the load they must carry and they try to use the most accurate part for the application . So if a 13mm bolt is a smidge better than a 1/2"- it gets spec'd. In the old days they would have just spec'd a 9/16 bolt but now with metrics they have a whole new arsenal of in-between sizes to select from. So from an engineer's point of view it is blasphemy to over- spec a part when the EXACT correct one is some oddball metric size. That would explain why my 2.2 ECOTEC engine uses an M12x1.75 thread for the oil pressure sender after 100 years of it being 1/8" pipe thread. If you know any engineers you know how they can be.......and that is another peeve of mine. Engineers designing things so no human can actually service it.

Ask any mechanic about engineers😉. It would be a blood bath if they met🙂.

My 2006 3800 actually has sae all over the engine itself. But really mixed. Entire short block, head and rocker bolts, and lower intake are all sae. Then the supercharger bolts, motor mounts, t stat, fuel rail, tb and accessory drive are metric lol

To be fair not all of the engineering blunders are the engineers fault. First they have demands put on them inside parameters, then the bean counters get ahold of it and screw it up some to save a nickel and then we gotta pay $100 to put the nickel part on it that shoulda been there to begin with lol

With a centrifugal supercharger you dont have to touch the exhaust or injection(tho upgraded injectors are a good idea). Only parts you have to modify is the air filter tube and of course the belt drive

I'm always assuming the stock supercharger setup. I mean, that Procharger deal costs multiple times what your car is worth .... 😱😛

EDIT: Uh, unless you bought your car on ebay, apparently .... 😀

Easy solution to the transmission fluid problem is take a 20oz bottle of pop and cut the top off. Shove it over the tailshaft and ziptie it on. Works like a charm. Gotta be this exact type of bottle.

Working on a front wheel drive car with the engine crammed in under the hood. Having to just have to start pulling stuff out from under the hood to do anything. My sister had a 93 Lumina Z34 that had the 3.4L DOHC in it. If you've ever worked on one, you know what I'm talking about. That car took a lot of the fight out of me when I was younger. I won't even work on stuff like that anymore.

Lq1 3.4 dohc was an example of bean counters and engineers not agreeing. Was actually meant for the fiero(amazing fit in that car BTW) but the bean counters killed the fiero just before the lq1 was ready. They had serious $ in it so instead of tossing it with the fiero they started slapping it in 1990-97 lumina, gp, and cutlass. And yes that motor is a wart. Had the same car been 3800 swapped your experience would have been more pleasant

Agreed. The car ran great but was just a pig to work on. A good friend had a 93 Bonneville with a 3.8 that wasn't nearly as bad to work on. I hate them all though.
