Does it bother anyone when people list their cam's duration with a decimal point in front of it, like '.230 duration' instead of '230 duration'?

So many people do that and I never understood why.

I guessing anyone that does that probably doesn't know what the duration numbers stand for anyway and they see decimal points in front of lift numbers and figure everything has a decimal point.
That's ok the first time I saw the word "dizzy" on this forum and I'm like what the heck is a dizzy, why can't you just spell distributor? I always thought "dizzy" was what you get from spinning around too fast.

I hadn't noticed the decimal thing -- but that's not because I'm guilty of that one 🙂 . I agree with the dizzy thing though. I spend alot of time on a vintage import site where that one is really common and it still bugs me. One of the tough ones for me to overlook is the use of "stall converter" in place of torque converter. No part on your car converts stall. Stall is a measurement/rating. Sorry to turn this into a rant thread.

When I put in my .230 duration cam, my stall converter was less. Is this caused by my dizzy?

I think you might have hit the nawz too soon.

"Dizzy" is commonly used over here, but just about anyone who knows about engines will understand what you are talking about. I too had never noticed the decimal point issue.

But I don't beat myself up about it, let's ban all slang and abbreviations, no more "carbs "shocks" or even "wipers" from now on. :blam:

A lot of proper terms are different in different countries, your hoods are our bonnets, trunks are boots, fenders are wings, lug nuts become wheel nuts, and it took me some time to figure out what a sail panel is. :?

Roger.

The decimal doesn't bother me but dizzy does. Writing is a skill that is being lost on short cuts. The English language allows us to understand what someone has written but when someone decides to create their own language it's not English any longer. It takes longer to write distributor than dizzy but it's only a millisecond or two so what is the excuse to use a word that means something else. When I read the short cut versions it doesn't catch my interest as much as when someone takes the time to write it in words most of us can understand.

Well pontiacgp, I totally agree with you that the skill of writing is becoming a lost art.
Now all we need is an automatic spell check in place and I'd be happy.

What about "transmission"? I understand about the language nuances from country to country. Just a natural result since the internet doesn't care much about borders. And I HATE text speak and complete lack of punctuation on forums like this. It's not only hard to understand but it makes me not want to help you at all. In fact, it makes me want to go out of my way to make things harder for you. Man, I sound like a grumpy old man.

This morning I woke up at 4am. Had my coffee and breakfast. Then I yelled at the morning TV news. Shook my fist at the newpaper. Went on Gbodyforum, flipped off the screen because of all the people using text speak and lack of punctuation. Ate lunch and Then it was time for my 9am nap.

I always sounds like a grumpy old man. My wife says I'm an 80 year old stuck in a 25year old body.
