So when I am talking about a rear end and I say I have 3.08 you have no idea what I mean? When you look at the numbers on the crown and pinion do they have a :1 after them?

He's just saying that people are writing 3:08 instead of 3.08.

Edit: Clarified faster than I can type.

For example, 3.73:1 (or more simply 3.73) is commonly written as 3:73 which makes no sense whatsoever.

Exactly. Thanks for simplifying my point.

pontiacgp, ring gears/ pinions are usually stamped with tooth counts. Such as 41/11 which equals roughly 3.73, not 3:73.

I agree with you, I misread your posts and thought you were concerned about dropping the :1. I'll take a : and go sit in a corner..

Is there any rear gear that's not rated at one revolution?

Probably not, but that's not the point. A ratio is a statement of how two numbers compare. The two numbers are separated by a colon ( : ). The number of driveshaft revolutions on one side and axle revolutions on the other. The axle figure is always 1 and it's fairly moot to even bother writing it out. The colon and that decimal point are not interchangeable. It changes the meaning of the numbers into something that doesn't make any sense.

That is a very mathematic based argument. Do I smell an engineer?

This one isn't a misstatement on a technical level -- just bad grammar. I've noticed tons of people who want to "sale" cars/items. Either your car is for SALE or you want to SELL it. "I'm broke and need to sale my car" makes no sense. It's not just this site. I see it on other forums and on CL all the time. Can't blame that one on autospell.

You can smell me from there?? jk/
Not an engineer, just disappointed with numerical illiteracy. Bonus points for 'spelling' your ratio correctly in your signature.

I recently had a post deleted on another forum for complaining about a rambling, punctuation-free post typed in all caps. The author pitched a fit and demanded to know if a Master's in English was required on that board. I had one of my kids (who actually does have a Master's degree in English) evaluate the post. She rated it as third-grade level work. Sure, you can be anonymous on the interwebs, but why make such a bad impression?
