as far as the V8 being a gas guzzler, I read the fuel mileage of the 2jz in a Supra is 13 in the city and 23 on the highway and that is under the best BS conditions.
I have come to grips with the fact that in order to move this shell, that 6 cylinder is going to have to breathe, so yes- gas mileage will be low.
I'm starting off N/A, but I do want to turbo it once its in.

Inline 6s have been in heavier cars.
If the 2J was enough for the Lexus SC300, I'm sure in a G-body it can't be half bad. At Least comparable to a 231 V6 until you put the turbos on, when the power goes up and the fuel gauge goes down. Ha

EDIT: I keep forgetting about the guy with the Regal that literally just did this swap. We really ought to just be asking him about this stuff. lol

In '93, the Turbo Supras and Auto LT1 Z28's were both rated at 15 mpg city/22 highway and 18 combined... but the Supra had 45 more HP.

I started crunching numbers.
Weight: 86 monte SS ; 3640
2000 lexus gas; 3638.
Dead even.
Monte came with a 4 speed auto trans. The lexus has a 5 speed auto.
The SBC weighs 525 lbs. The 2Jz motor weighs 518 lbs. Again- the same.
Horsepower: 180 for the Chevy.
220 for the 2jz, unboosted.
So, I'm getting a 40 Hp boost over a stock drivetrain with a motor intended to move a 3600 lb car.
Once I want to get more Hp i can turbo.

I think you have the torque and hp mixed for the 2jz, from what I read it's rated at 220 lbs torque and 210 hp at 5800 rpm, the SS was rated at 185 hp at 4800 rpm
