STAGE 4

Here we go again. This time, from the verrrry beginning(somewhat slow build). Car was running pretty good, but started to have falling oil pressure. Wasn't too bad at first, then I started noticing about 5 or so on hot idle. Then, finally a rod knock(so I thought, turned out to be the oil pump pick up came out of the oil pump). Figured since I have to lift the motor to get the oil pan off to investigate, why not go for the gusto and put in a big, small block 😀 . Here's what I'm working with. I got a 1973 SBC 400ci engine off CL, for a reasonable price. Found a set of 180cc Dart Iron Eagles for a good price. Bought a .030 over Eagle rotating assembly with 5.7 rods. CR should be around 10:1 with the 72cc DIE's. Gonna reuse the HSR intake and up to a 58mm throttle body. Definitely gonna get a new chip programmed this time. Still not sure on the cam. I want something for the street and I have searched the internet far and wide and have come up with endless possibilities(your opinions are welcome). I asked my machinist and he said he will contact one of the cam companies and find me a good roller setup. Just got the block back from the machine shop and ready to start putting this thing together. I plastigaged the mains yesterday and everything checked out. Gonna check the rods tomorrow. Waiting for a few more parts to show up from my favorite guys at Summit. Here are a few pics for now...

Re: Crucial118's 86 Cutty Salon TPI/HSR build w/ video

Thanks guys. I am anxious as hell to get this thing together. Can't wait. My machinist blocked the steam holes and other casting holes in the block where the cylinder heads mount. The plugging of these holes lessens the chances of cracks and strengthens the block. He said the steam holes are not needed. All that is needed is a water line "jumper" from the rear intake water jacket to the front water jacket(where you hook up the water temp sensor for the ecm and water temp gauge probe) on both sides. Never heard of this, but he said that that is all that is needed.

Update time. So far, the short block is complete. Everything went together pretty well. Cam in, billet timing sprockets done, 6 qt oil pan, timing cover, balancer, timing tape etc. Right now I am waiting for my heads to get back from the machine shop. I'm getting the springs installed that came with the cam kit. I wanted to install them, but when I pulled a spring off, the locators were too small and were not up to parr for the new installed height. I am learning a lot on this build for sure. Next up will be install heads, and check geometry for pushrods. Then time to pull the knocking 350 and install the 400, after I strip the 350s accessories and intake. Here are a few pics.

I like where this is going. When you get the tune right, it should be an absolute monster. What cam did you decide on?
Thanks 84sscutty. I was going over a few with my machinist and he suggested I go with the Erson e119816 cam, 218 int/226 exh @.050 with a 112 lobe seperation, .544 lift with 1.6 rockers. It should have ample vacuum for brakes and ecm intake sensor. Good idling cam and great for efi. We'll see. There is so much with choosing the right cam and it is a little over my head. So I will leave the choice in the hands of the experienced and knowledgable, and John at Ritchie Machine in Capital Heights, Md is both. As for the tuning, I am planning on either buying the autoprom, and burn my own chip, from http://www.moates.net or sending my specs to http://www.pcmofnc.com or some other reputable site to get a custom chip burned. Haven't decided yet, tho.😀
