Doing work for other people

Friends or family = no good. I'd rather work for a complete stranger, and become friends later.
Same here cause usually the easiest job becomes a nightmare or something goes wrong.... I usually charge 80 bucks a hour and make them bring the car to me

I have a 2 friends that are licensed Mechanics and do side work an charge by the hour. The vehicle comes to there home shop and the owner of the vehicle purchases all parts. 1 charges $40 and the other charges $50.

If you can find online or a Chrysler jobber book that gives you the estimated hours to do a repair, that would give you a starting point to break it down. Most of the jobber books take in account for things not running smooth so they always add in a little extra time.

i do work for people - on a very limited basis - i don't have a shop or all the big tools so there are quite a few things i just can't do. plus i'm retired and gonna be in no hurry. i just tell them up front it'll be $20/hr plus parts and supplies. oil changes usually turn out to be about $20 plus oil and filter - front pads usually around $40-$60 plus pads and fluid...that sorta thing. so far, everybody has been OK with it...and it keeps me outta the bar!

the remarkable thing to me is how few people know how to do either one.

Whenever I/ve done work from home, I\ve always charged by the hour. I'm a professinal auto tech so I charge the same as my regular before taxes houorly wage plus $10.00. I normally supply parts myself with a small mark-up (still less than the parts store price) and specify the time for a job based on Mitchel rates. Kinda like we do at work but usually about 30 less expensive. The important thing is if they accept my price it's cash up front. If people don't like it too bad. I am doing THEM a favor and spend my weekend doing something else.

Gotta agree with mike...pass on it...I worked five years in a mechanical resto shop...not worth the head aches...most people got no idea how much restoration work costs...especially properly done work...if you do decide to tie that boat anchor around your own neck see if dad will let you do the mechanical stuff first...where I worked some of the customers had the bodies completed first...nothing with more headaches than a finnicky customer watching you yank an engine transmission and rear end assy out for rebuild...staring at fresh soft paint...buy yoursef a profitable project car and work for yourself...

some guy who was intrigued by my GP with the 5 speed stick asked me how much I would charge to convert his Regal. I didn't want to do it so I said $6,000 plus he get all he parts. He thankfully thought that was too much money....🙂
