Fishing (2020)

When I go fishing with my son and his kids I am happy to come home with no fish. Grandkids used to be confused by the wrong bait that I used but I think they figured it out. I don't like fishing but it's fun spending time with them....🙂

My grandpa used to take me fishing but didn't use hooks because he didn't want to hurt the fish haha. I guess that's where I got it from... I like being out on the water but I don't like fishing, even catch and release. Funny thing is we used to just tie bits of bread, or corn, or hot dog on the end of the line, and we still caught stuff sometimes, including a big eel one time just because it wouldn't let go.

What's especially weird about it is my grandfather was a butcher... Family business going back to the 1880's, so he was fine cutting up a pig or a side of beef or whatever, and he told me they used to raise and slaughter chickens for the butcher shop, but he didn't like to use hooks? Seems odd in retrospect... But that's just how he was.

We just love the outdoors in our family. My Dad wasn't a hunter or a fisherman but loved being outside, even had an old truck cap with books and other things in it in the bush on our farm. It goes back generations in the Rae family, Hudson Bay Company men uincluding Scottish Doctor, Surgeon and Arctic explorer John Rae, my Grandfather's great uncle.

Took a trip to the north woods (down south for you canadiaites) this last week. Landed a ton of panfish which kept the kids into it and had a chance to snag some nice LMs and walleyes too. Mini me caught a 16” bass that grandpa netted for him - I don’t know which one of them was hooting louder. I’ll never forget it!

We call my lil man G, but gramps was laying it on thick to try and help him. We’re about an hour from the St Croix factory so I was getting pressure just to go buy some new stuff. There are usually some very good deals on what they call B and C stock rods (30-90% off retail). We went and I managed to get out only buying a sweatshirt this year....

Went to Thunder Rapids, no 10+ plus pound Pike, probably the biggest was 6 pounds, couple of Walleye around 4 pounds.Resized_20200906_085727.jpegResized_20200906_090331.jpegResized_20200906_090647.jpegResized_20200906_090849.jpegResized_20200906_093024.jpegResized_20200906_110058.jpeg

No problem, supposedly 8 above freezing tomorrow. We had our hottest Summer in years. What the hell changed is beyond me.
