for $600 I would not try to get it cheaper, that price is hundreds below the usual price for an 8.5. If I was trying to sell it for $600 and someone insulted me with an offer of $500 I would not sell it to him for less than $800...

Thanks for the replies, guy wants $600, says he pulled it out today, willl take a trip to look it over tomorrow. Thanks for info regarding drive shaft, will ask if its for sale also. Hoping i can get it for cheaper, but i think 600 is doable. 5 would be better, but overall i think a posi is an improvement.

Jinkies Shaggy - that might be a deal. I'll give you $800 for it if you don't feel you need down the road - lol.

If you put a bearing kit in it and a new set of clutches, then you'll be able to sell it for double of what you paid.

GN's with Factory AL brake drums were non posi (Only the GNX got AL brake drums + Posi), so if it has AL brake drums, either the Posi or the brake drums aren't original.

If the AL drums are original, the Posi might be aftermarket. Factory/aftermarket Eatons are preferable to aftermarket Auburns.

quote: (eventually want a 700r4 conversion)

If you have the th2004R, you'd be better off sticking with that. 200s are far superior to 700s. Better gearing for one thing. Did you ever hear of a GN guy converting to a 700r4? Hell no!

700 or 200?

Honestly its not even a fair fight. The 2004R will handle power that far exceeds that of any 700R4 or 4L60 that can be built at any price. 2004R has a better gear ratio spread, better overdrive ratio, will fit many more applications, lighter, stronger ... I can go on and on. The 700R4 is best left to applications where its the only option such as 4WD or All WD, tow vehicles, Lower HP applications or for folks that are more concerned with budget versus strength and reliability.-- Lonnie Diers, owner, Extreme Automatics --http://www.extremeautomatics.com/whattransdoineed/2004rwhatlevel.html
