FFS I must have got the pump for a car w/o AC or got sent the wrong one. Sure enough they're different lengths. sigh. anyone want a high flow olds water pump w/o AC?

new battery in, smoke tested everything. Nothing came out so thats a bonus. There's 1/2 a tank of 6 yr old gas, so that could be a problem. I figure I'd fill it up w/ 93 or something if it starts choking on it. eh. Put in the oil and ZDDP (new lifters). spark plug wires on....

Got the new water pump from autozone, sure enough its about 1/2" longer. I don't even remember how that happened. Removed the old pump and will finish things up tomorrow. I will film the startup (if there is one) for future generations to marvel at.

You might want to sample that fuel before you go too far. You can disconnect the rubber hose at the frame supply line, raise the rear of the car and use a siphon bulb to pump some fuel. Maybe siphon a gallon and if it seems ok try it in the lawn mower. Just a thought. I pretty well emptied my tank this way. Just a thought....

yeah, the gas thing does concern me. I figure I'll give it a shot and see what happens before I mess around pumping it out. sacrifice some chickens and knock on wood.

Going through this thread again. How did the T-50 feel with the 403? How long did it last? I am guessing not long, it was rated for 205 ft/lbs of torque, so even my mild 260 might have it shaking in it's tunnel. Did you put any stabilizer in your tank? If it is non ethanol it might have a hope in hell.

Honestly I never actually drove it w/ the 5-speed. That was before it moved in with me. I do remember that 1st gear was already noisy (bearings) and you couldn't get parts to fix it (don't know if that's still the case). He knew it was weak and didn't really put it to the test so to speak.... The overdrive was real nice though. We put the 4-speed in when I took it over because by that time it was beyond hope. That was '96. That trans was never meant to be behind anything but a V6 or 260.

Got everything buttoned up now. Unhooked the coil and turned it over until I got oil pressure. Yay. No obvious “oh sh*t” sounds either.

Adjusted the clutch out some more because it is still dragging a bit, need a helper to finish that job, but if I can get it right then it’s actual start time.

Pulled the cover off for the first time in years. I figure if I can get it out of the door should something bad happen then that’s good.

Time to go play some battlefield til my helper foot arrives.

booooooyah. Purring like a kitten.

Sort of.

Either I have a bad thermostat and/or water pump, or an air pocket someplace bad. Its getting hot just sitting at idle and both hoses and the radiator are cold. Thought I was able to get it out buy maybe not. Hopefully no damage done. Still sounds fine.

The clutch too right now is a mood killer. I've got it adjusted out about as far as I can take it. It moves fine, kicks out, feels like its going all the way in/out. Moved the car under its own power in the driveway. But its making a giant rattling racket in N and R. Maybe this is something in the transmission not right? In 1st it doesn't seem to do it. Dunno, will have to play with this some more.

Will post up a video of it running once I get it done.

Oh and the timing was 180* out when I first tried starting it. That was fun. The gas doesn't seem to be an issue either, but I haven't really pushed it.

For some reason the camera makes the clutch/trans knocking sound way way worse than it actually is, and doesn't do the engine sound a proper credit at all. The knock is only there in N and just a bit in R now. I'm wondering if I actually have it adjusted too far and now the return spring can't pull it back off all the way..... job for tomorrow.

Also forgot to mention some sort of weird thing with the clutch safety switch and the ignition. Like there's a "sweet spot" where it doesn't want to fully hit the starter or something. It'll "click" like a dead battery but if I futz with the pedal it'll start right up. *shrug*
