I'm kinda stumped. I know these cars came with a single exhaust system stock. When I hold my new muffler up between the gas tank and rear end, it seems to me the fuel line and vent line will get heat from muffler?????? I just ordered two 36" long DEI heat sleeves to slip over the lines above the muffler. That will ease my mind on that but there's still the back of the gas tank which will be a couple inches apart. Guess I need to build a heat shield? This ethanol fuel has a lower boiling point so I think this should be done. Don't you?

From the factory I always thought that the only performance / dual Gbody exhaust was a cat-back system ( MCSS , 442 and I believe the GN all used that system ). However I do recall in the late 80's and early 90's we would take a single in and dual out muffler from a 3rd gen fbody and use that behind the axle to get the look of duals. But like you said there is precious little room between the axle and the fuel tank to do that. Link below to a 3" system that I think you are referring to.

VIN 9 cars actually came with a heat shield to protect the fuel lines coming from the tank.

Back-tracking a bit to your brake booster dilemma
I was staring at my car earlier and I had an idea...
You might have already thought of this, but what about painting the booster the same gold you used for your stripes?

The Grand National exhaust was a whole animal to itself if I'm not mistaken. It was a catalytic converter-back dual setup but unlike the VIN 9 Olds 307 V8 cars, they had a 4-port muffler mounted transversely like the single exhaust cars or Camaros (as opposed to 2 offset single in/single out mufflers in front of the rear axle).

Assuming the Turbo VIN 7/9 cars had their exhaust that way because of some sort of scavenging theory? Or the V6 sounded trashy with dual mufflers to GM? Aftermarket systems just seem to use the Olds V8 VIN 9 layout though.

Anyway, I had quite a time getting my single style exhaust on a VIN Y Olds 307 V8 car "proper". The muffler area was a big headache. After a straight turbo-pack and a stock muffler, I had to use one of my offset neck turbo-packs I had intended on using for my eventual VIN 9-style dual exhaust. Finally had adequate room around the gas tank, and no more misalignment tension/rattles. Had to make a new tailpipe out of (2) 45 degree and (1) 90 pipes. The muffler is at an angle, but there isn't any other way to do it using a stock intermediate pipe.

I cleaned and scotchbrited my heat/ac box. Wanted to keep the stock look with the fiber stranded grayish brown. I put on a repop sticker and put on two wet coats of matte clear. I sat the 2 pieces in the car after they dried cause no room in the garage.

Here's my GM blue 350 Chevy. Going for a stock look. I globbed in gloss brush enamel in the bowtie and Chevrolet logos on the aluminum Proform valve covers. I then wiped the top with thinner to get a nice edge. So no brush lines. Very happy with them

I have started a much needed cleaning/restoration on a ralley gauge cluster. I got a 140 KMH from one of our members because I like the higher numbers than 85. It does read MPH underneath in smaller numbers too. I used a new household paint brush and it helped dust off the gauge faces. I got a little more bold and used a DRY small piece of a micro fiber rag and it worked great. I have 3 ralley gauge sets here and between the 3, I have nice unbroken parts. I wet sanded the face of the lens with 2500 grit sand paper and hand polished with Mothers plastic polish. It now looks brand new. Going to repaint the gauges outer plate, tripometer knob and screw satin black. I'll post a pic when I get it back together

Hit it hard all day long. I will be sanding and painting my firewall a 3rd time. I noticed a pretty nasty sag right in the smooth open spot that is visible when the hood is up. The bad part is, my engine and trans are sitting in the car. I will not let something like that pass no matter how bad I need this car going.

Been doing some online shopping and got ACDelco coolant temp and oil pressure sensors. Hopefully the gauges will read pretty accurate. Been cleaning up the engine wiring harness. I bought some of the new weave style wire harness wrap from Summit last year for my 55 but am going to rob it for the Olds since its already on the shelf here
