Did you check the voltage on your battery? If your gauges are working then you definitely don't have enough to start the car.
On a side note if the car is sitting put a battery maintainer on it and you will always have a fully charged battery

Def investing in a battery maintainer haha

Are the fusible links located on (or around) the starter?

Yep, right on the positive post with the battery cable.

Under the car now - the fusible link connecting to the starter is pretty short - is there somewhere in the fuse block or engine bay that I can test for continuity between the starter terminal and the opposite side of the fusible link?

Probe on the car side of the splice in the reds. Or, check them at the ignition switch. Neither are easy: suck it up, buttercup.
