Hummer: More Green Than Prius?

The prius is funny though. I was on the interstate yesterday with my new pos engine and transmission in the bed of my 4,000 lb v6 fullsize pickup. Was coming up on a prius and it jumped in front of me, then when I tried to pass it speed up etc. So I shoved in third gear going 65 and sooo long prius. AND I can get 30 mpg driving in 5th gear in the neighborhoods at about 800 rpm 😛 greenies

I look at it this way: If I have to give up everything I love and enjoy to maybe save the planet, I have in effect ruined the planet. The Earth exists for the pleasure of man. Without sentient beings, the planet is irrelevant. Humans are the only sentient beings here, so therefore we determine it's relevance. Otherwise, there is nothing that makes Earth anything more than any other small lump of rock in a universe that is billions of light years in size. Therefore, if we make Earth a place we cannot enjoy as we see fit, we ruin it. This is what environmentalists are trying to do by limiting human activity.

Plus, much of the Global Warming-err... Climate Change- hypothesis is unproven, and based on data that is wide open to interpretation. Man's role is not proven, and many so-called scientists omit relevant data to prove their theories and get further grants and funding. Sure the Earth may be warming, but no one has proven 100% the actual role that human activity is playing. I am not going to ruin my life based on the whim and funding extortion whipped up by some scientist who fears he will be out of work if he does not feed the paranoia. The climate has changed rapidly in the past and we have adapted. It will continue to do so in the future and there is nothing we can do to stop it. Plus, if the ice caps are melting on Earth due to human activity, why then are the polar ice caps melting on other planets in our solar system without the influence of an industrialized society?

I'm pretty sure the earth goes in cycles right, of warm and cold, so this could just be one of those and all the tree huggers are freakin out about nothing to do. Speaking of trees, the most pollution in the world comes from cutting forests down, not gasoline pollutants. And if there's more pollution and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, trees grow faster and more efficiently which should appease the huggers, they're just never happy. Why don't those types buy a harley, then they can save the earth and be cool doin it.

i know you're saying this from the point of view of your beliefs, and i am in no way ridiculing them. and of course i'm speaking from the POV of my beliefs but...the earth IS nothing but a lump of rock, or as i like to relate it--a grain of sand in the sahara. the earth is not here for our benefit, it's just here. and we do need to take some care of it to preserve our way of life, but there are limits (we're not there for the benefit of the planet). as you say if we eliminate everything that we enjoy we have already ceased to live.
oh and how do we define sentience? i can say that only i am sentient because only i know what goes on in my world, and you're just pixels on a screen (or a figment of my imagination) many other animals have shown what we consider signs of sentience. maybe true sentience is the ability to recognize sentience in others.
if the greenies are so concerned about the environment, why do they all drive cars? how come they don't seem to make sacrifices?

I also wonder why we have not gone into the next big ice age like all the chicken littles of the scientific community warned us of in the 1970's? I remember watching an episode of "In Search of..." from 1979 that warned of the coming Global Cooling. That will be the next fear tactic funding-crazed climate scientists push on us when the predicted warming fails to materialize. After all, junk science about climate change goes in cycles just like the Earth's climate does.

How about this. People are trying to keep us from drilling in alaska to save the wildlife overthere. Then I see the commercials about how global warming is killing the polar bears. Is it just me, or is everything gonna die no matter what?

Well, I am making an argument out of an Atheistic point of view that I do not necessarily support in my own life, but one that I feel makes the most rational sense here. If you take the existence of God out of the picture, nothing is relevant. Life exists on a short term basis, and only matters to those who are self-aware enough to experience it ( which is my definition of sentience). Should the Earth cease to exist, no one will ever even care, or likely even know that we existed. As a Christian, I see more value than that to Human life, but felt that approaching the subject from a more post-modern philosophical point of view was appropriate here since it is more universal, and does not take into account the divergent religious views held by those reading.

As for the ability to recognize sentience in others, I do not see this as necessary to the definition of the term. That is more a part of being human and caring for others than a necessity for one to be self-aware.

 i like that one!
anyone here remember the movie "soylent green" from the early 70's? basically it was set in 2022 and the earth had been turned into a wasteland and the seas had dried up due to global warming/greenhouse gasses. and they seriously thought this would happen. 2022 huh? only 14years away, funny the seas are supposed to be getting larger right now... :?

Well.... at least there were no more DAMN DIRTY APES!!!!

only if you believe in god, and take it out of the picture does life become irrelevent. otherwise most of the world would have no morals and would have killed everyone around them and/or themselves along time ago.
and how do you know that dolphins don't experience life? dolphins have shown emotion, can recognize themselves and play games. they have even shown "morals" in saving people who have fallen overboard, or are being attacked by sharks. there are a number of animals like this.
