And both had Hurst shifters (from memory?). .
The squared profile Hurst shifter is the aftermarket replacement. The only 78-81 A bodies that I have found to come with a Hurst shifter from the factory were the 79 Pontiac A body Grand Am and Grand Prix models. It was not an option either. The shifter handle and mechanism were made by Hurst but utilized the same mounting brackets, rods and levers. I was lucky enough to find 2 of them; 1 of which is for my own 78 Malibu. Pictured is the standard ITM manufactured 4 speed shifter used on the 78-80 A body 4 speeds. Below it is the rare Hurst manufactured 4 speed shifter used on the 79 Pontiac A bodies.

Gnvair; Both of Dwight's Malibu's had after market Hurst shifters, not OE. And if I remember correctly both were flat lever units Competition Plus (?).

Rally wheels would be period-correct for the time these were new, and slightly less boring than steel wheels with caps

That blk/silver 2 tone with the 5 spokes, for me, is as good as it gets. I like that a lot, and have debated painting my coupe in that scheme. The black one with the newer welds looks good, too.

Streetbu's car looks good too, I'm not usually a big fan of many-spoked (i'm a 5 spoke guy) or painted wheels, but they work well on that car.

I also like the C3 alloys, not often seen on Malibus, and are from the right time frame. I ran a set on a coupe I used to own that is currently owned by another forum member

Classic Cragar S/S is my vote.

With my Monte's conversion to a stick I originally had the flat stick on my Hurst. Now I have a round stick for the current rebuild. Makes it look more factory other that "Hurst" stamped on it.

First thing I would do is ditch the 2 barrel carb/intake for a 4 barrel.

Then find a set of 15" stock rims and dog dish hubcaps or at least something factory GM with some rubber that fills the wheel wells.

Weird optioned car
tilt steering
manual trans with console
remote passenger mirror
landau
chrome trim and bumperettes
but no a/c

What state did the car come from?
It came from new hampshire when new,it also has rear window defogger and 4 speaker am/fm
