Thanks for everyone's help. The more I thought about it, all signs point to a worn out part. Since everything else in the front end is going to be fresh I went ahead and ordered a new one from moog. If pressure couldn't get the taper to seat correctly it's obviously worn. The idler being basically blown out prob caused this.

these cars are known for wearing out idler arms and pot holes don't help.
