Re: Khan's Motoring Chronicles - PICTURES & VIDEOS

clutch pack,
there's a bit of a story here. These are discontinued by GM and basically every supplier had run out of stock. A few companies started producing these in small quantities by themselves, but did not last. These were virtually non-existent when I began sourcing them last year.

PontiacGP found me a contact on V8Buick.com, who began producing his own in small numbers, he charged $199 for a set.

recently, GBodyParts.com has started to sell these, I'm not sure who Brian gets them from. But same price, $199. Here's the link http://www.gbodyparts.com/product_info. ... 3129a096ab

I also bought a new S-Spring from there, http://www.gbodyparts.com/product_info. ... 3129a096ab
This is a genuine GM part, some dealers still carry these. But I wonder how long they will last. The S-Spring posi has become obsolete, replaced by Eaton's plate/coil spring system. I hope these clutch packs and springs are continued to be sold, as the stock 8.5 posi is a bullet proof system and will hold it's age, and it would be nice to have parts available to rebuild them.

Not all of us can afford new $550 posi carriers from Eaton.

as an extra note: I've had people ask about the "Eaton Replacement Clutch-Pack" that most websites offer, with round ears. They are used in new plate/coil style Eaton posi units. These are NOT useable in the factory S-Spring style posi. The factory carriers require square ear clutches, lick shown below.

here's some pictures

not so happy about the rust on the shims,

I wonder if it was opened up by customs, coming across the boarder. Let some moisture in, started to rust
... it was somewhat minor, I used some WD40 with steel wool to clean it up

get varying thickness, from 0.010" to 0.035", in 0.005" increments

DONE!
Gear change DONE! Finally after 2 years!
the 4000rpm pig of a stall is feeling much nicer, much tighter, much more responsive.

the rebuild was about over due, the old clutches were toast, almost smooth, hardly any friction surface left. The old spring feels softer too.
I will post pictures of the removed parts soon.

That is a great bearing kit and gear set..I never thought of it before but with a small pinion like that it won't have a much leverage to try to walk away from the crown....
whoa, that went over my head a bit...
I understand this now... the 3.42 pinion gear is HUGE! I didn't realize the ratio was dictated by the pinion gear, I must have read that somewhere and forgot.

Re: Khan's Motoring Chronicles - PICTURES & VIDEOS

When you said "a bit" I thought you caught on to what I was meaning. I'm used to working on the ford 9" switching out the gears for each track. The pinion gear in the 9" is supported on both ends to keep it in place. The GM pinion gears hangs there and the way the gears mesh the pinion tries to walk away. With the smaller pinion I assume its stronger and I only thought of that when I saw your gears. I guess your going to have to get stickier tires to get the advantage with your new gear set.

Re: Khan's Motoring Chronicles - PICTURES & VIDEOS

so I took the car for a lengthy drive tonight, bit of streeting, bit of highway, and a bit of moderate acceleration.
... it's almost stupid fast now! The converter has really woken up. The car is super responsive.
dealing with a bit of transmission and electrical issues, so I couldn't push it very hard; hoping to sort those out over the weekend.

should I go through a bit of a wear-in period for the clutches and gears? Or am I good to start abusing this? I'm already getting chants to take it to the track this weekend.
I will be taking it back to the shop in a week or so to have the torque and back-lash checked.

my old slicks saw their last action during my 12.6 runs last summer. I finally invested in new slicks at the start of this summer, they were so sticky, it was a nightmare with the slippy posi. Ignition issues at the time also had my engine bogging and bucking. So I have yet to see good use from them yet, but hoping soon!

some pictures & videos from this past weekend
been facing some electrical issues, but finally made it out
did not run too good, ET was average, mph wasn't too good, no real improvement from the 4.11s
best 60ft ever though, 1.707
crossing the traps at 5800rpm

this was an epic race, 455 with Eddelbrock Dick Miller top-end 4spd M22 rock crusher and 3.08 12bolt, he got me on the reaction time but I pulled with the slicks. Race was neck & neck, looking directly at each other down the whole way. Beat him across the line by 0.00263sec!

OK, fixed it. You'd left the "v=" in there. The youtube bbcode only wants the part after the "v=", not including it...
