More progress, we made a deal with one of the members here Toby for a good used A/C box for the firewall due to ours being broken to all hell (not sure why) but the innards on ours were in dirty but solid shape so time for new one. After we were delivered a pretty large box and packed very well I must say, some soap and water little elbow grease and voila' we have a nice clean new/used box ready to bolt back in.

On the spirit of saving valuable coin, I went ahead and modified the truck LS pan instead of purchasing a cast aftermarket piece. I cut out a section of the pan to shorten it up and had a good friend weld it back in place. Looks good, and does not leak at all with heated solvent. Tomorrow we are modifying the pickup tube to match the amount I took out. Next step is new pan gasket and off to engine plates, headers, trans conversion and hope to fit the 6.0 in the frame rails in a couple of weeks if everything goes right 🙂

Did some more assembly, painted the block and valve covers Olds gold so it matches the rest of the car.

Got to the point to test fitting the engine in the frame today. A good friend of mine donated a set of Edelbrock LS swap headers for an A body so we are on a mission to make them work. I did bolt the engine in today (minus trans) and found the engine too far forward to make the headers work. We ended up unbolting the Malibu frame mounts and moved them back to the next rearward hole which is about 3/4 of an inch. Tomorrow we bolt it back in and see if the headers clear the rear lower a arm mounts. Here are a couple of pics even though we pulled it back out.

Not much to update, we are waiting on trans parts to arrive. Did get the rear drum speed reluctor ring the other day but the gasket overhaul kit and rear 2WD output shaft has not shown up yet 🙁 Crossing my fingers for today FEDEX.

Pic of the ring (pencil for size reference if anyone cares 🙂 )

Big day for us, we converted the 4L80E to a 2WD unit. I ordered up a used 2WD output shaft, speed/reluctor ring and full gasket set. The whole trans had to be gutted down to the bare case, parts had to be swapped out and the whole thing re assembled. What a job, tell you what I have never tackled a whole transmission before and the 8 hours we spent on it today was very rewarding.

First thing was the teardown, not too bad but still needed our full attention. There are many sub assemblies that we did not dig into due to the fact they checked out within factory spec/measurements. The steels and frictions looked good too, so all we did was do the conversion. A different output shat, rear drum speed reluctor, and gasket kit is all we needed to tackle the job. To place the reluctor ring on the rear drum we put the drum assy in the freezer and placed the ring in the oven at 400* for about 20 min. Did the trick, just needed a few punches to locate it and we were in business. The output shaft is as simple as swapping it out by removing the snap ring from the drum and replacing it. Also the case plug at the rear will need to be pulled out, the kit I bought has a special plug with a small hole in it so it can lube the rear bushing but it's easy to do. It may sound like it's a simple job, NO, but those to you thinking transmissions are voodoo you might want to tackle one it's journey but a good one.

I did not do a full instructional, too involved in the job to spend the time so sorry to those who wanted more pics or tutorial. PLUS because I am one of the last people you may want telling you how to get this done, as this is the first time doing so. Any questions, please ask 🙂

A few pics of our adventure today
