the f body carrier is 7 5/8 and will fit in a 7.5 housing. Not all f body carriers were 28 spline though but if you can find one with 28 splines it's a cheap upgrade. It's not easy to find 28 spline axles though unless you want buy new

Some 10 bolts are 7.5 and some are 7.625, they both use the same bearings, shims, gear sets etc.
 
Need a quick opinon. If you had a choice of the following rear ends which one would you choose?

82-92 Camaro/Firebird 2.73/posi rearend with drum brakes. This rearend is from a '92 Z28, it has about 90,000 miles and works great. $150

or

I have a 2WD Chevy rear axle it is a 10 bolt 3.73 ratio 5 lug it has about 120K on it no posi or locker open rear end. it measures 58 inches from drum to drum.
 
Is this still for the cutlass? And is the truck axle you're talking about a fullsize truck? If so the only one of those that will do you any good is the camaro rear's internals. And you you will still have to get 28 spline axles.
 
What abut it being a 2.73? Would that be a big enough ratio to benefit a 358 sbc or I think I shuld wait on at least a 3.23 or what about a 3.11? The ad didnt mention a brand.

It depends on the weight of the car, seeing as the engine is bigger with a bit more weight I would think the 2.73 would be fine, it just won't launch quite as hard as the lower gears would. If the car is below 3,000 pounds somehow, the 2.73 gears might feel like granny speed in 1st gear. You'll be saving a lot of gas with that rear too, especially if you choose to get an overdrive.
 
As for ratio it all depends on what your preferences are. I started with the 241 open and loved it on the highway but I didn't like it in the city so I now have 342 posi and like it in the city but not so much on the highway so now I'm going to drop in a 308 posi....

What if I got a 10 bolt 2.73 that bolted onto my chassis and wanted to get a stronger ratio, what would the process be? Could I get a 3:73 posi and bolt it into the housings? What would be my options as far as leaving the axle but changing the gears?

rear 7.5" 2.73 gear ratio(POSI).

As for your question on changing the differential, it's a headache in GM ones unless you know what you're doing. This is why I'm choosing a ford 9 inch whenever the time comes, ford just had a better idea when it came to the rear end.

Actually if the differential was already set up in another housing as long as the bearings and races are in good shape you can drop the pinion in the pinion will be adjusted for just about every other housing. The back lash is easy to adjust and it's not difficult to learn what how to set up a rear end. The ford rear end is great if your using it a race car and need to change the rear quickly but street cars rear ends are not usually changed once you find the ratio you want. Also a ford 9" is alot heavier than a 7.5.
