Been sitting on my *ss the last couple days, have 2 weeks off to heal. It's boring AF. Would rather be fixing crap. So now you're all blessed with my incessant presence.

And done. No big deal, like I said just more time and material.
Spotted in the burn through spots, then re-cleared the whole door with 3 coats of PPG EC530.

I’ll have to re-wet sand the whole door again in 2000, but that ain’t but a thing.

The reason I burn through so easily on this thing is because I was STRONGLY recommended to not apply more than 3 coats initially. Otherwise I was told some catastrophic things could happen. These new environmentally friendly clearcoats aren’t like the old ones where you could just keep pounding coats on to have material to work with. So that’s what we did, only 3 medium-wet coats were applied in the booth. But the downside is less room for error in the wet sanding process.
Oh well, it is what it is, and I’m dealing with it as I come across it.

Oh, and if y’all didn’t like today’s paint touch up and blending post, ya probably won’t like many of the others to come this winter. I’ve got a handful of areas like this that I have to go back and fix, so you’ve been warned!

D.

And just like that its all better! Sucks you blew through the paint, but you want perfection and perfection is what youll get.

Looks good D.

Update time again gents.

Been fairly busy on the car this week, got some work accomplished on the Olds girl, as well as a couple new purchases to further refine it.

After dusting in the burn through areas and re-clearcoating the passenger door, I went to Mike’s last weekend and painted the underside of his trunk lid and associated hinge parts. That gave the door a while to cure and setup. Once I returned to the door, I began the whole paint correction process all over again.

Dry sand with 1000 grit on the DA, then back to back rounds wet sanding with 1000 and 2000. It went well this time, no more burn throughs:

Finally time to start polishing it back up again.

Earlier in the week while I was working on this, a package I ordered showed up:

This is a padded trunk mat/carpet kit I ordered from Dixie Restoration based on a member’s recommendation that it fit his Monte Carlo perfectly. Upon opening it, I found the padding was not attached to the carpet like I thought it would be. No biggie.

So I began by placing the padding in first to see how it’d fit. I was less than impressed:

Looks ok initially, but lots of voids and not very good coverage, particularly around the wheelwells and underneath the package tray.

In order to get good coverage at the back around the filler neck boss here...

...it had to be pulled back which then caused interference with the spare tire cutout and spare itself:

There was also this goofy hooked portion on the driver’s side, no apparent reason for it.

Also, by pulling it back to get good coverage at the back of the trunk, there wasn’t enough material left on the flat section under the package tray. So I did what any good car crafter would do, considered it to be a good starting point and then took matters into my own hands.

Dug out the big roll of jute padding I made the door insulation out of, and cut two nice big pieces the size of the package tray area:

Then spray glued the crap out of them and put them together doubled up.

I took the aftermarket padding out and trimmed the goofy hooked section off...

... and then enlarged the spare tire cutout a bit to fit better:

Next I placed my homemade jute in place under the package tray, and trimmed the aftermarket padding off at the kickup bend.

Much better. Now the padding more or less fit the floor with better coverage, and the area under the package tray was completely covered.

Good coverage back at the filler neck boss still too.

Time for the actual carpet. Here I was much happier with the product, good and full coverage, with the material being near identical to the factory stuff.

The camera makes the carpet look a bit washed out, but it’s actually a nice deep black and looks very good in person. Overall I’d give this product an 8 out of 10, the padding left some to be desired, but the carpet itself made up for it. In hindsight, I probably would’ve been further ahead to have just made my own padding and bought just the carpet from Dixie, but I had no idea at the time that the padding wouldn’t cover everything.

Once I had that little project under my belt, I returned to the door and reinstalled the lock, handle, belt moulding and mirror.

Nice to see it back together again!

These are a 4 piece set of genuine ACC embroidered mats purchased through Stock Interiors. I chose metallic silver thread for the rocket emblems as I felt they’d stand out and contrast better than a grey that would’ve matched the interior trim.
A quality product that I’m very pleased with.

Today I got back onto the door again, and pulled the door glass out. Then liberally coated the inside seams with cavity wax just like the driver’s door.

Same as on the other side, laid it in until it dripped out the drain holes. Thankfully I was smart enough to remember to put some paper down on the floor to catch the drips this time.

I promised y’all some feedback on this cavity wax when I did the driver’s door, I said at the time I had the suspicion that this stuff would congeal and firm up a bit as it dried. My suspicion was correct, although it never fully dries, it definitely congeals and doesn’t stay as runny as it is when it first comes out of the can.
Perfect, just as it should.
It’s a little bit of ick and mess, but well worth it in the long run for added insurance and longevity.

I’ve gotta let this stuff set up a bit, then I can clean and reinstall the door glass before buttoning up the rest of the door with the new homemade vapor barrier and insulation.
Making headway anyways!

That’s all for now guys, thanks for checking in.

D.

Who does that level of detail along the bottom of the door? Seriously, are they employing ants with cameras at car shows now?
