BUILD THREAD Project Olds Cool (Recognition!!)

Well, I don’t know quite how to break it to you guys or why, but the original noise is gone. Good, but unfortunately it’s been replaced with a much worse sounding one from deeper within the engine. This one sounds much more serious, like a bottom end rod or bearing.

There’s something seriously wrong deep within the motor. Possibly oil pump? Who knows.

I’ve got one last thing I can try once I feel motivated to even look at it again, but it’s a long shot and not likely to bear any fruit. If it doesn’t pan out, then the engine will have to be pulled and torn down. Not exactly what I wanted a month before spring.

To say I feel defeated is an understatement. It may just sit in the corner for a month before I even feel like looking at it again. So pissed right now.
Been there and I let it get the best of me. Don’t do the same. You’ve conquered way larger hurdles on the car already.

This about sums it up perfectly:

Have you had the oil pan off? Can you take it off without pulling the engine? Is your oil pump pickup just pressed in? Or tacked/brazed? One crazy idea I had was maybe it was loose and rotated down to the pan floor and was vibrating against it until it bounced up enough to stop..... then repeat. I know my lunatical ideas are just what you need in this time of frustration. 🤪

I hear you Donovan. It is very frustrating when you try to improve a car, like an exhaust upgrade, which turned out great BTW. I have chased one thing after another on the 70S, I understand how you feel. We are all in this insanity together for some reason😁.

This is how I felt when Dad's Galaxie had no oil pressure. Get away from it for a day or two and start fresh. Or maybe ignore it and work on the rear end. That is a very, very nice car. It is in no way a piece of $hit, even if it needs an engine. Hopefully it doesn't. Either way, you'll overcome it with your talent and attention to detail.

No to the oil pan off, there’s not enough room to drop it with the engine in the car.

Oil pump pickup was tack welded by me when I assembled it, I suppose it’s possible that it broke and is hanging loose. That would be a best case scenario IMO, but my luck hasn’t been that good lately apparently.

Your ideas aren’t crazy, literally anything is possible right now. I sincerely appreciate the moral support.

Thanks Christian. I’ll get out in front of it, I just need some time away from it to recoup and regroup.

It’s like you read my mind Jared. I think I’m just going to ignore the motor until I’m ready to deal with it again, and continue on with the original plan to remove and overhaul the diff for now.

I don’t think it’s going to warrant a new engine, but I’m dying to find out exactly what’s causing all the issues. I also can’t guarantee that I won’t use this opportunity to make some improvements and maybe a little more horsepower with it.
😈😉

Didn't you just take out the distributor? And didn't it have oil pressure before? Bearings don't just go....

Yes and yes. And I know they don’t, I’m just relaying what I’ve found. I’m grasping at straws here. I can’t think of anything else that would sound like a woodpecker in the bottom of the engine tho.

Told you that you should have disconnected the torque converter from the flywheel. 🙂

Sorry, just trying to keep a bit of levity because as much as it sucks, at least it's sucking right there at home instead of 300 miles away somewhere. I've been lucky three times so far when the car decided to break that it was in the driveway or I hadn't even driven a block from the house where I could turn around and limp home. (head gasket leak right in the driveway turning car into mosquito fogger, transmission gave out not shifting out of 1st, and a wheel bearing that all of a sudden started to really get loud b*tching and groaning)
