Quick Question

I have a 84 Grand Prix with the 231 3.8 and I was wondering... What is this?

This is a complete newbie question. I was at my local auto parts store and one of the employees didn't know either. I'm trying to buy new belts and neither of us knew exactly what it was. My Haynes manual doesn't specify what it is either...

Another question:
The A/C compressor doesn't work so the belt was rerouted before I got the car so I don't even know what size of belt to purchase.

Any help with either of these questions is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I think that looks like an air pump. Is their a line coming out of it?

I believe that an Air or Smog Pump. What it does I'm not exactly sure, perhaps someone else could define it's specific purpose.

I searched for "smog pump" on autozone.com and that's what it is.

What is the function of this?
