It could be an axle. Jack it up and pull on each wheel. If I was gonna buy another 7.5 I would go to a pull it yourself yard. Much cheaper.

Let's back up a little bit here. You said the car rolls in park and grinds initially when you go from drive to park? That sounds like a trans issue to me, not rear end. You most likely wound't see anything by checking the fluid right away with that kind of failure.

If it were me, I'd get the car in the air, on jack stands/lift or however, and start trouble shooting before throwing money at it. I'm just speculating, but i think you'd be more inclined to frag a rear end from a hard launch than a hard shift. The hard shifts usually kill transmissions from what I've seen.

The trans & drive shaft are turning with nothing to stop them (brakes) the grinding is probably the parking paw trying to ingage.
78 shift into neutral and wait for the shaft to stop before going into park - better yet just turn it off - before you do break it.

the driveshaft spins, wheels don't move

sounds like the rear end to me

^^X'2 The last rear that grenaded in the malibu was a 1st to second shift while heavy on the go pedal. Fractured carrier, pin dropped and fragmented the spiders, I wish I took pics, the carnage was beautiful! .

To answer a question a few posts back, yes a 3.08:1 was offered in a gbody, best bet, find a car with an OD transmission in your local u pull it, they're more likely to have a nicer dual purpose gear out back. Look at the SPID label under the deck lid (assuming it's native to the car, and rear is too, ) GU5 signifies a 3.23, GU4 would be a 3.08, G80 is posi. If all else fails, rotate the yoke ten times, and count how many times the wheel rotates (easier with a friend), it'll get you close, Good luck.

Put her up on a hoist and remove the pan. Easiest thing to do. SOunds like the spider gears bit the dust.

And don't try rolling the car around or flat towing it anywhere. If the spiders broke(usually the problem) there is nothing to keep your axles from walking out of the rear.

It's most likely the two pinion gears that broke, they are the weakest part since the side gears are bigger. The pinion shaft is still there to keep the c clips in place locking the axles in place.

I refer to all 4 of those as spider gears(just as a generic term I guess). And it seems as soon as one lets loose it destroys more very quickly. The pinion shaft doesn't matter as soon as a spider breaks, since without the gear there it'll pull right through. 4 times is enough for me to have a strong dislike for these rears.
