rear end gone?

And I don't have anything to technically tell me what there supposed to be called. I know i've heard the smaller ones referred to as the pinion gears before. But I've always referred to the side gears as spiders even when I was only talking about the sides. I'm more inclined to believe that on an open rear the side gears break first. Mostly because I believe the pinion gears actually share/split the load but generally only one side gears sees the entire load. I've never stripped the splines, always shattered the side gears or a combo of side and pinion gears. Again that is just my experience.

So I opened my cover and saw pieces of both pinion gears at the bottom 🙂 one of the side gears is nicked pretty bad, all the others look good...

Well then IF you can get all the broken pieces out and you feel comfortable doing so, you could probably replace just those parts. Sounds like you got lucky. Remember though, it doesn't take a very big chunk of metal to go through there and wipe everything out so be sure you get ALL of it. Keep us posted.

If it's an open carrier it might be just as cheap to get a replacement from your local yard than it would be to buy new spider gears

I'm getting a complete rearend from the junkyard (2.14 gears) 😢 , I'm gonna save up for a better one 🙂
