Relay getting too hot!

The wire going to the WP is a little smaller than that but matches the wire coming out of the WP. This is the wire on the relay plug that appears to be getting hot.
The one coming out of the Water Pump going back to the Relay?

Where is the other wire connected to?

The hot coming out of the water pump (from the factory) is matched in size and goes all the way to the relay.

The ground coming from the water pump (from the factory) is matched in size and goes to chassis ground.

The hot wire - FROM the battery - going TO the relay - is approx 12 gauge. This is the largest wire.

The relay also has a ground wire and a trigger wire which are probably 14 gauge.

I decided to cut the relay open (it is sealed) and nothing inside looks burned. If i check resistance (not energized) between 30 and 87 with the relay closed it is zero ….

Also, the wire that appears to be getting hot, is the power wire from the relay to the water pump (87 on the relay) judging by the melting of the relay plug.

Would be a good idea to have all your big power and ground wires match, atleast be the gauge on the water pump. The trigger wires don't carry that much load so 18ga at the largest there.

Thanks, i guess ill beef up the ground, replace relay and plug and keep an eye on it. Im glad i used those labels. Would not have known it was getting hot.

What are you using for the connection to the relay? Handmade connection or one that came with the relay? Bad crimps in a “factory” connector could cause this issue.
One that came with the relay
