Here is a throw back on buying a car the old fashion way, driving around spotting the old for sale (sell, sail, Sal, cell,...😛) Back in '95 I bought a '72 Monte off a guy in the Brighton Heights section of Pittsburgh & thought it was sweet deal for $300. The guy said he need the money for an engine for his Buick. Asked what he needed (my buddy had several SBC's in the garage I could of bartered with) & said he need an Olds. So a call to co-worker from PepBoys to see what he had & scored an '71 350 in gold for $100. Make the deal, head to get the 350 that was very well sealed for storage (he is a mechanic by trade) & drop it off. I'm happy, he is happy (for the time) and I get the title. 6 months later he shows up at the parts counter & I was there. Asked how the car was coming along and if I put the 283 I was building in it yet, I told him is wasn't. This lead to a body bolt out of his pocket & said that this was what he found in the 350 after it failed just on 1st start after he put it in (a perfect usable bolt I might add.) I asked if I could see it & headed to the service side of the store to show the guy I got the engine from. He laughed, said yea right, then asked where the engine was so he could see it. I go back to him to ask to see the damage (we both promised a good engine said we could get another from the stash of Olds engines that the co-worker had.) The guy said it was gone, he got another 350 but I could have the dead Olds 307 when I gave him his $300. The co-worker jumped in, asked why he dumped it got another 350 when we would of got him another he started to stumble on his words. Then told the guy he recorded the engine VIN cause it was his habit when selling running engines to make sure his *ss was covered (he has been burned in the past on an engine he sold.) At this point there was several other co-works around to see what was going on. The guy couldn't come up with an answer & hauled *ss out the door. Found out later he blew the 283 in his '66 Nova & was looking for another one. The guy thought he could use the offer to replace the 350 as leverage on my 283 (the 283 ended up being a 307 after I started the rebuild.) I learned never to promise to replace an engine I sale-keep it as is, copy VIN & any ID numbers on an engine I sale, the general public are *ssh*les when it comes private sales.
