Serpentine belt conversion

I've been trying to use the serpentine setup from an '88 Firebird (305 TBI) on my '84 Monte. Its been an interesting conversion. I'm trying to keep all of the O.E. emission controls from the Monte (its an SS, so it has A.I.R.) in place and functional, since the smog police here are getting more strict about this stuff. I was able to get all of the related parts from the Firebird, including the A/C lines and condenser, and the A.I.R. parts. The mounting brackets fit fine, with the exception that there is one tapped hole missing on the front of the passenger side cylinder head, which holds the mounting bracket for the A/C compressor and A.I.R. pump. I believe that the later cylinder heads ('87 & newer) have this hole, but since GM didn't use the serpentine setup until the late '80s, that this hole wasn't deemed necessary before then. I don't think that the missing hole is critical, as I have read through a number of threads on other sites from people who have done this swap without using that threaded hole, and have had no problems. If you use the F car parts, the power steering pump and pulley will clear the steering box OK. Its tighter than the original G body setup, but its OK. I had to run a new power steering fluid return pipe on mine, as the bends in that pipe to return to the F car pump were a bit different than the original G car pipe, and I wrecked the original G car pipe, trying to rebend it. I used the reverse rotation water pump for the Firebird, and it fits fine. As for the alternator and A/C compressor, they switch sides with this swap. I'm using the Firebird alternator, which is different than the original Monte alternator, but there is a CS to SI alternator conversion harness available from several different sources (I believe that the GM part number for a car with factory gauges is 12102951). With the added length of the conversion harness, everything should fit fine-if not, you can lengthen the harness as required. I'm using the A/C condenser from the Firebird, as its basically a drop-in on the Monte, though I've heard that the condenser from a mid-'80s Cutlass with a 307 will work well too. I've tried the suction/discharge hose assembly from the Firebird, and its a bit tight, but it should work, and I'm going to convert the A/C system to R134A during the conversion. The big problem that I was running into, is that I was trying to use the factory Monte air cleaner assembly (for emission compliance reasons), and because the air cleaner duct is on the passenger side, I had A/C plumbing, A.I.R. plumbing, the hot air hose from the exhaust header, and the air cleaner ductwork, all trying to occupy the same space at the same time. After some thought, and some different ideas, I've decided to run a modified Camaro air cleaner (which has the ductwork on the driver's side, where I have some room), switch the hot air pipe to the driver's side header, then that should allow me to run the A/C plumbing and A.I.R. plumbing on the passenger side. Right now, I'm still running a mechanical fan (one conversion at a time), so I got a fan & clutch assembly from an early '90s GM pickup, which uses the serpentine setup with a mechanical fan. I'm still in the process of getting all this done, so I can't tell you how well it works (or even if it works), just yet, but I'm thinking that it should work OK. If you're looking for more info, there are threads about this on other sites, the one on MonteSS.com is just about the best one I've seen so far. Sorry for the long post.
I hope this helps you out.

Don't be sorry for the long post at all! That was very informative thanks much. Thanks for mentioning the Cutlass and Regal condensor and lines, I noticed on my dad's 442 it's on the opposite side. Are there any problems with using a PS pump from an F-body with an F41 steering box? And do you have any pics or yours? Sounds like a great stock looking retrofit.

As I said earlier, I haven't actually finished the conversion and driven the car just yet, but I've installed the F car power steering pump (because I got it along with all of the other stuff from the Firebird). I just cleaned up the pump, changed the pump shaft seal, and painted it, and installed it. The original power steering high pressure hose from the Monte SS (which has the factory F41 steering box) fit into the F car pump fine, and as I said, I ran a new return pipe from the steering box to the hose that goes into the back of the F car pump, with no problems. I'd like to oblige you with some pictures, but I'm not very good at that part of working my computer-sorry. Good luck with your swap.

Not a problem that's really the only questions I had about the swap were the PS pump from an F-body working with an F41 box and the situation with the AC compressor lines. I was worried about the bolt holes on my older 69' SBC heads, but I looked at the conversion brackets that GM sells and it looks like the d/s head has the 3 bolt holes, and the passenger side has one, which is what I have.

I run an 89 4.3 V-6 set up on my 76 350. All bolts lined up and it was a bolt on. I used a thermastat housing from a 90 or 91 Cheby V-8 to get it to feed behind the alternator. I had to flip my hose as the radiator I was using is from a 73 A body and the inlet was bigger. Hoselays over the left valve cover and I have not had any over heating issues yet. The only thing I can see is the V-6 versus the V-8 set up is how the accesories sit. The donor car/truck you get it from will either be a high and closer set up as in a van or blazer, the V-8 set up will be lower and wider. Either version will fit in a G body without hood clearence issues.

That's very good to hear thanks for that. Do you guys usually get the accessories with the brackets, or are you just buying new or reman. units from parts stores? I think during the winter I'll start buying the pieces whenever I come across a good deal on eBay or CL.

I pulled mine complete. It had a newer water pump and a good alternator, the A/C compresser went out when I was trying to charge it. It had sat open for a few years. I new most of my stuff was good because I pulled it off of my old S-15 Blazer.

I started with a new water pump (whopping $15 I think), and used alternator on my first setup (steel bracket setup, I don't prefer/recommend it), but wound up replacing the alternator. The second setup I used the same water pump I had before, but it had a bad alternator. Took it back to the junkyard I got it from, and got a $20 replacement. I'm sure it'll fail eventually, but I did it on a budget, and when it fails I'll just buy a new OE replacement with a warranty 😀

So basically yes, I pulled the whole setup as one unit. The steering pump I got with the first setup (from a parts truck I had), and it still works, so I continued to use it.
