I am watching this thread with interest. I have a 2008 Suburban with 113K miles on the 5.3. I used a diablo tuner to do the 87 performance tune (which i dont think does much) but i also diabled the DOD. Anything i should be looking out for? I have a solid 40lbs of pressure at idle all the time. Up to 60lbs while driving. Sorry for semi-hijacking this thread lol.
I'd keep driving that as long as it doesn't start clattering.

I'm wondering what they do for the 87 performance tune haha

Little crap like PE delay delete, reduce/eliminate TM/TR, sneak in a smidge more timing down low, play with shift points, etc. I remember seeing a few items I'd address in the Envoy, one of them was that first gear looked to be a little torque limited up to 3000 RPM. The math implied to me it shouldn't affect actual output, but if that were the case why did they bother with that? Oh yeah, abuse management can EAD too.

Yea, makes me wonder how accurate those flash in generic tunes are.

They're not great. From what I understand often times they do global bumps on the timing map which is kindergarten level, shorten shift times, kill TM, and other super low hanging fruit. Nowhere near what you can achieve with the laptop.

I often wonder why everyone wants to try to turn these up only because my 5.3 has plenty for a pickup truck. It gets 13mpg towing 9000lbs in tow mode, 16–18 empty city and hilly driving, and 22-24 on the highway without a load.

Pertaining to power, there isn’t a hill that it won’t pull at 65 when towing as long as I’m willing to run 4-5k rpm’s pulling big hills.

Stock factory they are really down tuned. Then again pulling you don't want to turn up the beans too hard, start popping pistons. Transmission tables definitely need to be touched up in anything.

Same reason you turned up your G body to run in the 9s.
