Wow so it is not just my car.....??? I was wondering why they go bad so fast. Sumbitch. You know what I did this time to my new one? I coated it with cosmoline (thin layer) and I sprayed 100% silicone spray inside of it, the slide and end where the diaphragm is encased. I figure this way nothing rusts or dries out. So far so good.

I tend to agree with fleming442 about it likely being a fuel/air mixture issue. Dirt in the carb, or a vacuum leak. It's free (except for time) to check over the vacuum lines to make sure they haven't fell off somewhere or lines cracked/crumbled. Not that new plugs wouldn't be welcomed, but I don't think that's the root of the issues you describe.

Also, make sure the vacuum/mechanical advance on the distributor is working. I'm pretty sure 84 Regals all had CCC. You can't mix/match CCC and non CCC (computer command control) things. So I'm assuming there's a vacuum advance on the distributor??

Oh I forgot to mention. I used SEAFOAM for the first time to clean out the tank lines and carb. Put two cans and filled the tank. I guess it dislodged all the dirt in the system. I figured I was doing a good thing. I mean the car did pop once in a while before I used SeaFoam. But it got worse after I ran the two cans through.

The seafoam may have fouled out the plugs

And Like said above change that filter

Damn I created it most likely. I always used TECHRON by CHEVRON all these years. Never any trouble. First time I tried SeaFoam..... UGH !

if the plugs are old TECHRON would have destroyed them too

In the future should I stay away from these additives? If so, how do we keep the carb. and engine free from carbon buildup? Just Marvel Mystery Oil then?

2 cans is way too much, no more than 1 ounce per gallon

I'm a boob sometimes.... I remember years back that my plugs fouled so bad once that the engine backfired and blew the rotor contact and burned, some spark plug wires. I was using Techron at the time each year. So he had to replace all spark plugs, spark plug wires and rotor.

what I usually do is to put 1/4 of the can in the oil ( I have a 7 quart pan) and the rest in the gas tank and then fill the tank
