Glad to see it going back together Zach!

Just a little tip to make your life easier if you have to redo your valve covers again, next time just paint them all over, complete. Then take a little lacquer thinner on a clean rag or towel and wipe the paint off the tops of the fins. Q-tips dipped in lacquer thinner works equally as well, that’s what I use to do mine. Or you could sand the fins with some coarse sandpaper, but that tends to just clog up the paper.

It’s way less frustrating than trying to mask them all off ahead of time.

Looking forward to seeing you get it back together!
Damn it D, I was finally gonna have some helpful insight and you beat me to it. Hahahaha, but totally feel Zach's pain. I did something similar on the GTO coil covers because I wanted to be very specific with the colors.

I have been chipping away at getting my car fixed. Seems like everyone and everything in my life have been needy lately. Hard to find time to work on it. Almost have all my parts to put it back together. Me and Fedup ****ed up last week. One of my packages with my headgasket said it was delivered Thursday, but it wasn't. I called Fedex Saturday to find it. That was not much good. A neighbor a few miles away had it delivered to them Saturday afternoon. They were nice enough to bring it over. Opened the box and found Rockauto sent me the wrong intake gasket and I only ordered one headgasket instead of two. The block is ready to go. View attachment 146472 Kind of a cute little fart. For such a little engine it sure does make some power. I have been cleaning up and repainting engine parts. Heads and intake are ready to go. View attachment 146473 Valve covers turned out good. View attachment 146474 They were kind of a c*ck to mask though. View attachment 146475 I painted the headers with some grill paint. Supposed to be good to 1500*. We will see how long that last. View attachment 146476 Looks like I get to sand and repaint my air cooler again. View attachment 146477 Yesterday when I painted it, it fisheyed. I tried hitting it with another coat tonight and that happened. Kind of boring stuff, but it has been kind of quiet around GBF so I posted it.
Looks great Zach. Nice attention to detail. I'm looking forward to seeing your car back on the road.

I've been Fedex'd like that as well. They have a contract that they guarantee delivery in a certain time frame, so fudging that the item has been delivered keeps there on time rate above the minimum acceptable level. I've learned to live with it - it usually happens with Amazon for me.

I'll bet that intercooler's aluminum has decades of garbage absorbed into it meaning that it's almost impossible to get all of the contaminants off rom it which creates terrible adhesion for your paint. Looks like a great place for sticker on the hot side elbow that says 'blow me' and on the other that says 'thank you' ( 🙂 ) .

X2 on quiet, but I love this motor and setup - holy moly UNIQUE ! All things turbo and whooshy sounds are better than OK by me. Can you here the turbo and blow off valve much? And did I miss t that you have your O2 sensor under control or a plan?
Thanks for the compliments. I did not want to go through the headaches of shipping so I bought another headgasket and intake gasket through O'Reilly. Cost me twenty more bucks, but worth it. I do not have a blow off valve. Grand National's do not run one either. I have thought about adding one. The sounds are pretty mellow until you step into it. You can definitely hear it sucking air. I am hard of hearing so there are plenty of sounds I don't hear.(detonation) I like the chirp and sound when I shudder my turbo. For those that do not know what I am talking about. It is when you let off the throttle after building boost. This not a good thing, but I like the sound. What is happening is the air gets balled up in the intake tube because the throttle is closed and is actually back pressure against the turbo. That is what a blow off valve is for. If I road raced or had a stick shift I would definitely have one. I try not to do that, but coming in and out of curves is fun. As for my gauges I plan on routing the controller cable on the other side of the engine away from my distributor cables and see what happens. I need to buy a o2 sensor for the PLX so I will have two wideband gauges. I should get a pressure sensor also so I can monitor my fuel pressure with the PLX. As for the Knock sense. I have a Casper knock gauge wired to a ignition module. The module only runs the gauge. Not the best, but at least it is something. I have thought about a J&L Safeguard, but they are pricey. I have a internet friend that runs a blow through Buick setup. He has given me some help for fuel and timing trims. I don't think I am too far off on my tune. The plugs look good to me and if I was off there would have been more damage than a headgasket by now. Racing that motorcycle and the engine had stock 3.8 headgaskets is what went wrong.

I know what you are saying. The thing is. I polished the fins before with a buffer and clear coated them. That is why I taped them off. Thanks for the compliments and advice. Much appreciated. If I ever do another set of valve covers like this I will do it your way for sure.

Composite 87 turbo gaskets. Beings it is a old engine with iron heads I didn't know if the block and heads were flat and smooth enough for Cosmetic. After cleaning everything thing up. I could have. The block has been decked and the heads have been planed when the factory rebuilt this engine. I did decide to buy ARP head studs though.

Ooh, I was unaware that there is not a blow off valve. The pressure build up you described is the concern that turbo damage is occurring. To each his own though. I've found the BOV to have another function as well, when it's making a ton of go and the car breaks traction snapping the throttle plate closed will immediately dump all of the boost. It's my method of 'pedaling' when that happens. Pedaling via small throttle movements once on boost is totally ineffective - the motor makes the same power whether at 50% or 100% throttle. I'm very curious if your blow through setup acts the same. It seems that the Sniper would due to it is MAP referenced.

Going to have it going by the weekend you think?

A blow off valve is a good idea. I just have not got around to it. My engine does not make as much power as yours, so traction is not too much of an issue yet. Sometimes I go sideways when going into second under boost. My turbo is a little big and laggy off idle. That helps with traction. I need a stall converter to make it more efficient. All in do time. I am still running the original transmission yet. As for having it going by the weekend. I could have it running by the end of the day, but I don't spend that much time working on the car all at once. I have small kids I spend a lot of time with, I have horses, and I work on construction equipment all day. I am talking a little extra time and pretting up stuff.
