BUILD THREAD “The Juggernaut”

I am a phone user. I click on the picture and then go to edit. Go to resize and click OK. Then I go to save and it asks what size. I pick 50 mb and it saves it to the studio file. The only way I can post pictures is that way. Hope that helps.

Great info, I'll give that a shot.
Thanks!

Donovan, we've had a lengthy discussion about two tones....my vote is hell yeah! With the amount of body mods done to the Naut, that thing would look sick two toned and slammed on the ground at shows...not to mention just cruising.

I know the current trend is satin and matte finishes, but I personally feel that should be held for trim work, accents, etc. Nothing like a badass muscle car with metallic so deep looking you could figuratively hide you're arm up to the shoulder. The metallic Jim used, which is very close to my cutlass looks that way. The hue changes based on shadows and such which i just dig!!!!

Go for it brother, btw cool avatar pic!

Scott.

Yeah Jack, it definitely helps with the 'ol inspiration factor!
But more importantly, it helps clarify what the car would look like finished. Paint materials are too damn expensive to be playing trial and error with. It's nice to see how the car would look in a finished state, and if the colours I have in mind would go well together.

Personally, I'm liking the potential results based on the rendering, what say you all??

Yay or nay?

Like two two tone or hate it?

Like the two colours together, or not so much?

Weigh in with your feedback here, and let me know what y'all think.

Thanks
Donovan
Very cool rendering theoldsone did for you Donovan. The car will look great. I wonder how a lighter color on top would look? Like a dark grey, but not quite as dark as Jim's or Scott's car.

Thanks for the vote Scott!
Yeah, you and I have had that convo about paint and two tones, I was pretty sure you were in my corner on that one! 😉
In fact, you're the ONLY one with the "insider info" on what the planned darker colour is going to be...

Glad to see you agree that it should look pretty slick once it's done and prowling the streets or aired out at a show. I can't wait for that day.

Your point about the current popularity of the satin and matte finishes is exactly what I want to avoid. As much as I absolutely LOVE that look, I feel it will probably look dated in a coupl'a years. So rather than risk it I decided to stay with the more "timeless" route with my trim, keeping the shiny bits like rather than blacking them all out. Hopefully it'll help in the long run, 15 or 20 years from now.

The Viper blue pearl that I've chosen
has a TON of metallic in it and it absolutely pops in direct sunlight. It doesn't quite "flop" as much as yours or Jim's, but it will be stunning nonetheless.
🙂

Yeah, it's so hard to try and guess how colours will (or won't) go together Jared. That's partially why I'm so happy for the rendering from TheOldsOne. It makes things a bit easier to visualize.

The thought of a lighter grey on top is intriguing, I just want to stay on the slightly darker side of things in that colour spectrum, and not go too light with it.

Definitely want to stay away from silver, as great as it would go with the blue, it's a very popular combination and everyone and their dog has it.

I have my suspicions that the dark metallic grey and dark Viper blue along with that wide aggressive hood should combine to make the car look dark and more than a lil sinister, which suits me just fine!
Lol

Alrighty, time for a quicky update.

Now that things have kinda settled down a bit with roof and furnace stack repairs done and upgrading the lighting in the shop, I've been gradually honing in on the car again.

Progress has pretty much ground to a halt on the hood as a result of all that crap that fell in my lap after Christmas, so I figured an easy way to build up momentum again would be to finally get the headlight bezels and grilles done and in the "win" column.

Since it's been almost a year that I got them back from the spray chromers, I'll give everyone a quick refresher as to where I was at.

Prior to sending the pieces for spray chrome, I had meticulously scuffed, sanded, and painted the pieces that weren't going chrome, black.
Unfortunately for me, the spray chrome dude said that there was absolutely no way he could mask off and keep the black I had applied, and that he HAD to spray the entire pieces.

FML. Figures.

So after several months, I got the call that they were done and to come pick them up. Once they were home, I started in on scuffing and sanding all the same surfaces that I had ALREADY done prior to chrome, so that I could paint them black AGAIN.
Grrrr. Hate doing sh*t twice.

Aaaaand that's where I lost interest.

Half sanded, they sat that way here on my bench for nearly a year now.
Ok, so brief history done.

The last of the sanding and prep was finished earlier this week, and last night was spent thoroughly cleaning the parts and masking. I knew masking off the grilles was going to be a PITA, but holy crap. What a job.

Total time to re-sand and re-prep the parts?
Probably 20-30 hours. (No exaggeration)

Total time to clean and mask off the four parts for paint over the last 2 evenings?
Roughly 8 hours.

The grilles were the worst, very intricate parts, and difficult to mask. No, the blue is not paint, it's fineline masking tape. I used almost an entire roll on these pieces!

Anyways, here they are, done and ready to go. Tomorrow night, hopefully hang them and give them another thorough cleaning, and if there's time, paint, AGAIN.
Wish me luck!

Thanks for checking back guys. Hopefully in the next day or two I'll have pics of the freshly finished parts, and OF COURSE, unmasked and installed!

Cheers
Donovan

D, my hat is off to you on having the patience to re-sand and tape off them grilles....gives me carpel tunnel just looking at the pics lol! However, the end result will be stunning no doubt!!!

I have to say i don't envy that process at all, the tips you gave me on the sanding sponge trick saved a bunch of time and frustration, but damn I'm glad to have checked the grilles off of my "to-do" list. The crappy part is i still have many more parts to prep and paint for reassembly after paint like the headlight buckets, taillight trim, and more.

In regards to using the satin finishes, i believe it must tie into the overall theme as i know you will agree. It's not for every hotrod, and can look outta place real quick. As Jim and myself are doing with blackout trim, i feel it will make the build more cohesive and should look cool for years to come. If people don't like it, they can suck it because it's my vision, and money lol! I had to change something because i got tired of stupid people calling my cutlass a GN so many times because it was black!

I like your plan of keeping the brightwork on the Naut and it's definitely more fitting for the overall scheme of things. That thing is gonna be soooo cool when complete!

Sheesh, short thoughts turned into a long reply....rant done lol!

I agree, hard to pick up in the rendering but a gunmetal metallic on top would look great and definitely the two tone works! Really nice to have that visual of the car.

No paint tonight, but everything got covered, hung, set up and wiped down.

Ready to rock for tomorrow night!
🙂

One thing's for sure, you won't have a problem seeing in the shop now geez! Time for some 😎!!!

Looking good D, I'm excited to see them grilles and buckets done, i know you are!

Thanks brother!
Yeah, the new lights are deadly. HUGE difference, shoulda done it a couple years ago! It's SO critical especially for painting to have good lighting.
I was just thinking to myself tonight, I'm finally on the home stretch with these parts, but damn, I'll be glad when they're done!
