we have a 91 caprice. setup is a 305/4l60e trans. problem is it takes it to wind almost all the way out to shift into 2nd. and it wont go in 3rd (driving that is). you can shift the shifter fine. nuetral, park, and reverse operate fine. im just at a loss for words with this damn thing. ive checked the fluid multiples time. the guy we got it off of took it to brownies (IT) trans shop. and it started doing this. car sat for 6 months then we got it. is this going to be a easy fix or somethin way more complicated? am i just looking over something?

is this a 4l60E with a trans computer, or a 4l60 with a throttle valve? if it's the throttle valve, make sure it's adjusted correctly, if it's the E/computer controlled, have it checked and probably rebuilt

vacuum??? what on a 4l60/700 uses vacuum?

If it is a 4l60e it will have an electrical plug for the cumputer to hook up to. It looks like this

Oh and if it is the original motor and trans then your working with a 4l60, not 4l60e. 4l60e's came about in 93 or 94 I believe. Also a 4l60 will have a kick down cable a 4l60e will not it is controlled by the computer.

have a good trans shop do a scan and diagnosis. but very likely it will need a rebuild.
however, if it's an original to the car, it is most likely not a 4l60E but a 4l60/700-4r. i just looked up a few things and the E version didn't come out till 1993.
if that's the case, there should be a throttle valve cable running from the carb to the trans and it MUST be there and adjusted properly for the trans to function and survive.

chrisO: just to avoid confusion we avoid calling it a kickdown cable as the adjustment and function of a KD cable vs a TV cable is completely different
