What Did You Do To Your G-Body Today? [2020]

Nice patch but now I am curious about how you plan to re-install the body mount bolt once you start to re-assemble your project cause I am thinking that your hole used to be about where one of the body rubber biscuits used to be????
Once I get the rest of the frame done, i'll lower the body down, do up a few mounts to ensure it's square, then set a mount there, trace around it, and use a hole saw. it'll be one of the last things I do.

$20 says I forget.

when I did my patches I cleaned up the frame and laid the patch with the hole already cut on top of the frame. There was enough of the original hole to line it up. I was not worried about the thickness of 14 gauge metal affecting the body sitting on the frame.

and I added weld at spots on the frame that was missed at factory

Once more of the frame is cleaned up I fully intend to "fix" any factory welds I see. There is a sh*t ton of slag by the spring pocket on the driver's side rear as well. like the guy was practicing on my frame lol.

Yup. About what I ran into as well when it was time to mess with those holes. For most of them I was lucky enough to have enough of the original hole still there that I could clean up the nastiness and then build up the edges of the circle back to about the original shape and finish them out to being round. Lots of work but frame off wasn't an option so in situ had to be the way to go. As for shitty seams, under the fire wall body mounts on the bottom face of the frame where the curve out from the front clip mates to the side rails is also a miserable site. Had to visit the driver's side and will do the same for the passengers when I cut away the rocker panel on that side and replace it.

Yo, Wageslave, My 85 has gauges, factory stock. Thinking from what you said that what used to be there was a two prong sending unit and that at some point the feed to the electric choke got amputated. That carb would have likely been one of those Q-Jet ECEME?? alphabet soup units that took its instructions from the box behind the passengers side kick panel. Both the box and the carb have long since gone the way of the lesser Dodo bird.
The present carb is a Holley Spread Bore with an electric choke that is not directly wired into the engine bay harness. With all the switches that I have I coul go with the single prong unit and screw it directly into the block in the stock location; think it is short enough to clear the timer base. With one of the two prong units I could go back to power from the sender to the choke and delete some wiring and complications. Could also assemble a 90 degree offset items similar to the brass ones that I have and lay the sender on its side to gain some more clearance. Just evaluating options right now. Be kind of neat to keep the mechanical gauge that I have in there now and extend the tubing to get the bracket somewhere quieter. Would need a tee or weird looking elbow with a side nipple attached to it to do that and just happen to have one on the bench. Hmmm, gonna have to go looking again and see if I can score that factory two terminal socket from an orphan wiring harness. Delays, delays.....

Took it out on a 160 mile run for a site visit. Dang neared totaled it when an Aramark vending box truck decided to pull off the right shoulder from a dead stop to cut directly across 3 lanes and an exit median to hit a left hand exit he had missed. I was approaching at a high rate of speedm and the conversation in my head went something like this: Don't do it, you dumbass. Figures. What the... No you aren't. Yes, you are! You dumb MF'er!!!!!!!!!!!!!" as I swerved into the left shoulder/ exit median.

that is why I have a nice little dash cam....

I got 4 longer body bolts, raised the frame and hung it with the longer bolts and measure between the frame and rocker till the C channel was square and equal measurement to the rocker on both sides. Then I tighened those bolts till I could the stock bolt in the middle of the C channel, then the other bolts and finally I removed the 4 longer bolts to put in the stock . It took me a while but the body is on straight and square.

not much, I started to repair the driver's armrest since it doesn't appear there is any around for sale. I also removed the plastic surround on the t top glass and cleaned up the marks it left with 0000 steel wool and acetone. The Fast handheld works perfect and I beat my grandson at badminton. He thought he would pull a fast one and bet me $10 he could beat me. I have not picked up a racket is 3 or 4 decades but I was the second place holder for all the high schools in Montreal and I was able to beat him, then he wanted it double or nothing playing volleyball. When I declined he said I defaulted so he owes me nothing... 😡

Installed a shifter handle from a first gen S10. Better than the handle I had with the missing end.
