It's nice you have an HVAC guy that will help out. Heck of a lot more service than most people get.

My experience from friends and family that have HVAC work done is you would get a bill for $700 plus labor for "Unit not working, replace board" since most HVAC guys can only do 3 things, swap boards, charge freon, or pop rivet ducting together.

Plus good luck getting almost any HVAC part to do it yourself, the parts distribution industry in HVAC is the most cult club and won't sell you sh*t if you aren't a 'licensed HVAC specialist'. You can get damn near every residential electric or plumbing component from Lowes or Home Depot but good luck getting the simplest HVAC part besides a vent. You can buy every piece of refrigeration component for mobile equipment too.

Dad has done AC work on off highway equipment since he was a dealer tech in the 80's and he couldn't buy the fitting to pull a vacuum on the line set of his pre charged mini split he installed in his house this spring. He ended up using his R12 gauge kit and found an adapter fitting from an anhydrous ammonia fitting he found at the ag supply store.

If you search online for any info 90% of the responses you get are "If you are asking that question you are not a professional and don't have business touching that component, you need to pay the dude a bucket of cash to solve your simple problem. Buy once cry once".

Yes, I am salty towards the HVAC industry. It's a total setup by the HVAC industry to protect the HVAC industry. The more protective an industry is to itself the easier it is to do yourself.

We got lucky when the capacitor went out on us last Summer, it was a heat wave, on a Saturday, and I was in single Dad mode. Had a guy drop everything (heard his kids in the background) and come running. Identified the cap failed, called to get the part, drove an hour round trip to get it, and didn't even up charge me for the weekend labour rate. I was ready to replace the whole thing no questions asked. We had a discussion about possible future replacement and was very open about the options (ie. not up selling). His card is hanging in our mechanical room.

There is no way I could have done any of that myself under the circumstances.

Changed out the front door on the garage Saturday. House had the original 1957 door and now that the garage is heated the old one was pretty drafty and rattly.

My wife found this door free on FB a few months ago. Someone flipped a house and must have swapped this 2 year old door out with a new 'pretty' one to give that curb appeal thing they talk about. It literally matched the front main house door so it was a no-brainer.

Painted the trim and was going to put the old screen door back on and looked at it and couldn't. The old door made the screen door look pretty nice but this new door made it look like trash.

So, I dumped the old house front door screen door (that was sitting in the garage when we bought the house uninstalled) and this garage screen door on FB Marketplace for free and both were gone in 4 hours.

I was going to haul the old wood door that I removed to the dump and she convinced me to put it on FB marketplace for free because someone might want it for a craft or something.

Surprisingly 4 hours later someone came and picked up my scrap door, haha. Saved me a trip to the dump!!

I am posting all my scrap building supplies on marketplace from now on. I don't have to pay to scrap them at the dump or drive to the dump. Score!

The only bad part is now I actually have to spend money on new screen doors.

My neighbor asked if we are flipping the house when I chatted with him Saturday. Apparently we have been doing so much remodeling people think we are profiteers 😂

I had a situation years ago where we just moved into our house and it was the dead of winter and the hot water boiler (for heat) quit. I had zero experience with boilers at that time and also had my wife and newborn son in the house.

I was forced to call one of those 24 hr. repair places. It was after 8:00 on a Friday night. The guy told me over the phone there was going to be an upcharge, which I totally expected, due to it being off hours.

He was there quickly, troubleshooted the problem, had the part on the truck to fix it and we were good... until he presented me the bill.

There was also an upcharge on the part!!!!

I said WAIT A MINUTE!! I understand taking you away from your family in the dead of winter on a Friday night. But that part has NO CLUE wat time of day it is.

He said, "You're right!" And he also figured if I was home alone, that I probably would have waited until the next day instead of needing to concern myself with the rest of the family. He waived the upcharge on the part. 👍

I'm totally supportive of an HVAC tech that actually diagnoses and replaces parts instead of shotgunning parts into units. There are certainly a number of good people in the business but it seems tough to find them!

Maybe HVAC guys in Canada are better 😛
