thats another reason. my f250 has had 46 years to marinate in brine, the rustiest trucks i see on a daily basis are consistently GMT900s. once in a blue moon ill see an obs chevy or an 800 as bad or worse than my truck, at least from afar. why pay that much for inferior quality parts, metals, plastic sh*t, and repair procedures so convoluted that you almost have to have a chemical engineering degree to change the coolant. In the modern times we're living in, when a manufacturer can literally paywall you out of hvac functions it makes me want a new vehicle even less. The absolute newest I would ever go as far as trucks is the gmt800s. my buddy had one with 330k on it before the rear end exploded when we tried to leave his driveway. $1500 beater vehicles all day. Even if I ever trick someone into starting a family, a trailblazer from the early 2000s would suffice just fine.

I love how everyone frames that Audi incident as though it's a normal feature that the owner is somehow locked out of. Normal HVAC functions all still worked. The 'Sync' button is part of the tri-zone climate control. And while that feature is included as standard in some countries, it's not a standard feature in that particular country. So basically the customer is complaining that a feature they didn't pay for, doesn't work.

Only reason it gets attention is because the button is there despite the feature not being purchased. But probably it's cheaper to build a single version of that HVAC module as disable/enable stuff in software. And it's a double kick in the pants when you push the button and rather than doing nothing at all, the car reminds you that you're a cheapskate.

It's not uncommon for manufacturers nowadays to basically include all the hardware and enable/disable features via software. It simplifies the BOMs, makes manufacturing and inventory easier to manage and makes it easier for team to make sure they can accommodate the desires of their customers rather than having to search the country for Model A, with features A, B, C and D in color Y. I don't know of a case of it, but in theory it could allow them to enable the feature after purchase for a fee if you change your mind. "Oh, I really wish I had got the Dual Zone climate control" "Sure, we can enable that for $xx" That'd be great IMO. Or even demo it. Enable it for 30 days for free, you like it and use it, you pay for it. How many times has someone though they'd really like a feature only to realize, it's not that useful for them.

What I do not like is the subscription model. That one drives me nuts. Oh you want remote start? $5 a month. That kind of thing I hate. The software industry has gone through a similar change. You used to buy Microsoft Office and own it and use it until you decided it was worth actually upgrading. Now it's all Office 365 and you pay an annual fee for it.

Used a buggered CV-40 carb body as a fixture to locate and secure two portions of a throttle cable bracket that I wanted to re-unite. Chamfered the edges of the joint down to gain some more surface for the passes and bolted the two parts down solid and aligned.

Aluminum makes a lousy ground for this sort of work but worked well enough to get the initial tacks set in place. Hit both sides to make sure the bracket didn't warp or pull and then let it all cool down. Threw a little Dremel love at the surfaces to remove the high spots and finished off the passes. Knocked down the high spots again and metal finished it to where it looked acceptable and left it at that. Came back into the house and swapped the resident bracket on the carb for the one I had just created. Big diff is that my version brings the mounting sleeves for the accelerator cable lower and closer to the carb body for more clearance under the tanks. I am only running the one cable, but now have two options for how to install it.

TBHD phoned yesterday to let me know the bowl screws for the CV-40 were in so today I wandered on out there and picked them up along with the correct mounting screw for the bracket. Swapped out the bowl screws and popped the bracket screws into the inventory. All these parts are for an application that is 34 years old at its oldest and no longer in service. FI and computers are the trick of the day and if you think car computers are evil, they learned their wickedness from their M/C brothers which amp up the definition of evil to a far higher plane.

It's starting to get close to sustained 'summertime' type weather here, which means time to deal with leaky old ac in the yukon.

3 fresh cans of 134a, topped off fluids, changed wiper blades, basic summer season maintenance.

May head to auto fest as a spectator tomorrow and do a bit of shopping, so figured do a go through before the longer trip to be comfortable.

Bought new subwoofers. Not as powerful as my other ones, but will do until my better CV’s get reconed lol.

I know it still looks old and I didn't do much, but that was the point. My house is very old farm house. All that is left is to come up with some baskets for the top and a cabinet for the pool chemicals and such.
