soooooooooo.... on Sunday I swapped out my turn signal controller switch on the 08 Silverado w/5.3 LS, no real problems, just little finicky T25 screws to get at from behind the steering wheel.

yesterday, I started replacing the Camshaft Position Sensor as I've been getting a constant CEL with P0340 code and hard starting..... got all the way to where you pull it out and the damn thing . will . not . come out! just sits and spins. I can't get it levered out as it sits between the water pump and crankshaft pulley with barely any room to pull on it. and the inevitable happens....the top breaks off and it is still in the block.

btw, the picture below shows it as just before the tab broke off. it's now flush with the block. and I have drilled a couple pilot holes to put coarse thread screws in...still won't budge pulling on those. I considered pulling the crankshaft pulley until I found out the bolt is torqued to 240lb-ft, and me without a impact wrench. (it's also a torque-to-yield bolt and that means one time use under proper circumstances.

any ideas? drill it out? tow it to the shop before I eff it up even more?

BBC swap it!
it gets better. apparently I managed to drill thru the back of the timing cover, so now we have to pull the whole thing which is booked as a 5-6 hr job. final bill will be just over..... $1300 .... for replacing a $40 part, which now includes replacing the timing cover for $98. all the rest is labor

So today started out with me having the intention of making a payment on account at my Napa dealer. S-10 started perfectly and I let it warm up a little while I took a scraper to the windshield. Backed out of the driveway and motored up the street. No issues. Get to the Napa shop, go in, make the payment, come back out, hit the key.................................And Nada. Nothing, Zip, Zilch, crickets. Go back in, scare up a new battery because the current one is over five years old and has been bromancing with a battery tender all winter long, get that in and hooked up and. Nada. Nothing, Zip, Zilch, crickets, Again.

At this point I am out of options as it is either the neutral switch or the starter and my shop is snowbound and inaccessible for at least another month. Phone the yard and learn that their rollback is in the shop for a brake job. They say they can phone another company and get them to do the pickup. 1/2 hour. TWO AND ONE/HALF HOURS Later, the rollback finally shows up. Driver informs me they have a new dispatcher who speaks something that isn't quite canadian english and who leaves out a lot of important information relevant to the calls and pickups.

By this time it is after noon and I am STRESSED. Finally get the truck over to the yard; guaranteed they will not be able to do a starter swap today, and tomorrow is Good Friday and they are closed. Meaning Monday at the earliest. I have no idea what will have to be disturbed to get the corpse out and hope they do not have to F*** with my exhaust head pipe on the passenger side to do it as if they mess up one of the manifold studs then the manifold will have to come out and I am looking at broken manifold mounting bolts, meaning either the fender and inner well have to get taken off to gain access to the head, or the engine comes out completely. All of that adds up to $$$$$ that I cannot afford to pay someone to fix.

The only bright light in all this is that I anticipated being a pedestrian and booked a rental for the weekend. Having that in hand let me finish my errands for the day.

And don't get me started on the Squirrels!!!! Reminded me of I-35 inbound just after Lino Lakes at 2 PM on any day of the week.

For those who might be wondering what if, at this point.....the Van is not an option. No block heater, Choke is set for summer time operation. No winter tires and no weight in the back to stop safely should some moron decide to do stupid without warning. And it still has its last year's oil in the pan and the accumulator has not been recharged so pre-oiling the motor before first fire is a no-go at this point.

Only option left would be to have the truck brought home and put in the front drive and then see if a friend knows of a beater that I can score for cheap for a few months until i can the van on the road again at which point my options get a little better.

Hope this $40 dollar part ballooning to mega $$$$$ thing isn't contagious.

Nick, what year is your s-10?

Got bored and painted the air cleaner and valve covers on the k1500.
Also, managed to whittle down a 22mm nut to a 14 roundy boi. I don't know how but I the two weeks I've had the wheel soff previously, this one nut had basically become one with the wheel. Every socket I pounded on there stripped the nut further and further. I tried everything to break the stud too, upto and including doing my best fall guy impression. Nada.

Anyone have any advice besides cut the wheel off? I'm not opposed but I'd rather not.
The nut is fairly inset into the wheel so i don't think I have a lot of options.

ck80 you asked about my S-10? It is a 2003 LS 3 door with the 4.3 L V-6, 2WD. Disc front/ Drum rear, In that series, the "LS" indicates and extended cab vehicle that is Not a crewcab.

Why/What/Something of interest going on?

I stopped messing with them when the body style changed in the 94/95 years for truck/suv...

BUT....

How similar is the '03 for mechanicals/systems to a '98 model do you think?

Went to the junk yard a few weekends ago with my Fiero buddy to get some Fiero parts.

2ft of snow prevented me from getting anything but it was a good way to take a 2 mile hike.

Huh!?!? Seem to recall that 97/98--04 was the last generation of that body style and name and then in 05 they went to totally different body shape and nomemclature. My 03 has a fairly round/curved body design that flows; the 05's and newer went to edges and angles and got flatter in their paneling.
