Congrats man!! I know the feeling 8) I would change the color of the block, but thats just me. To me the gold or blue is what makes an olds motor an olds motor

Re: 1986 Olds Cutlass Salon Thread(About Time!)

I have finally got a 350 in my cutlass, took us (three of us) an hour and a half to throw the engine and transmission in,everything is basically ready.I would roughly say i'm 85% complete of the entire engine/transmission swap.I still need to buy header gaskets, exhaust system, crossmember, temp gauge and wire up everything and it'll be ready and legally driveable.I am worried about hood clearance though,i already know the hood will need modification for the air cleaner since i have the raised intake,it'll be very close if any with the dropbase on there.I do want to run my dual snorkel air cleaner on this engine though,so cutting a hole in the hood will do.I plan on getting either a 2" cowl induction hood or getting a hood scoop from a H/O and cut the hood more to fit the air cleaners better.

With a drop base, I don't think you'll have a problem with hood clearance, but I dont' think you'll be able to use the factory air cleaner on top of that Holley...

Looks good in there!

Looks like the Performer RPM.

I agree. We have a Performer RPM on my brother's 403 with Speed Demon carb and a drop base air cleaner and 3" filter. No hood clearance issues at all.

Re: 1986 Olds Cutlass Salon Thread (updated 6-20-10)

wow,it's been quite awhile since i've posted anything here. I have now been 9 months into the cutlass project and still not done. Since of two weeks ago the cutlass is now mobile, i road tested the cutlass up and down my alleyway and it runs ok (timing is not set and the carb isnt setup right so it cuts out and backfires a lot under full throttle),everything works including my repaired tach, speedo and the new gauges. So far over the past months i have been busy at work and ordering parts for the car, so far i have a 3 core radiator from champion cooling, hurst shifter cable, mufflers, transmission cooler, and some other goodies i ordered for it. Everything mechanical is done, leaving me to get it tuned properly and get exhaust and a new inspection for it. I got a price from the local exhaust shop on how much it would be roughly for my cutlass is at least $250. I am also in a rough spot with the inspection title being it is still young enough to be emission tested i have to run cats (which i wont), or get a modified title for it. The only other problems i have with the car now is the price of 110 octane ($42 for 5 gallons) and my shifter cable. My cable is a 5 ft length hurst cable and it is wrapped atop the transmission because of its length and it is very hard to shift it into any gear,i'm guessing somewhere there is a kink in the cable since its wrapped atop the transmission, so shifting is very difficult as of now. That's basically all that has been happening now since the last time i posted on here.
Here are some pics of the progress from the last time i posted and currently how it sits.

Sweet progress! Why not go back to a stock shifter and cable assembly? Also, are you using a roller cam?

Re: 1986 Olds Cutlass Salon Thread(About Time!)

I will be going back to a stock shifter if i can find one,i have the stock cable for it still and the transmission arm is off the 2004r that was in my cutlass so everything should be bolt on.Right now its very hard to shift and the force needed to shift the transmission from 1st to second is so much that you miss second completely and throw it into third.I will also be converting over to a stock automatic valve body and put a transkit in it sometime unless i can figure out the problem with the cable/shifter. I also need to get a plate to cover up the big hole made for the aftermarket shifter so most definitely i will be going all stock again in the near future.

The valvetrain is roller, solid roller lifters from mondello and a lunati roller cam.

I also forgot to mention i had to cut the middle section of the hood bracing out to fit the air cleaner since it was hitting it.
