i may go look at the muncie i posted if he will pop the side cover. anything to watch out for while popping it/ putting it back together? also what should i look for inside as far as wear or damage? i was thinking maybe i would offer him $400 if it was in good condition (he's asking $550)

also i have located 2 bellhousings with the correct ballstud location. one is the chevy 462606 and the other one is a universal chevy/bop housing. which one would be better?

Yes, be very careful that it is in neutral before opening it. Don't let the shifter arms fall out, and by not disturbing how they sit in the side cover will make it easier to replace. Once inside, look for nice clean oil, no debris, especially brass which would come from the synchro blocker rings. No chipped teeth on the gears, especially reverse, and no slop in the mainshaft. When putting the cover back on, it will be difficult to get the shifter arms lined up properly so be careful, and don't let them fall into the trans! Be aware that aside from obvious damage, you can't tell if a trans will make bearing noise or shift badly just by looking at it. Once in the car you will know for sure. Without opening it, you can tell the ratio by puttying it in first gear, then you can mark the input and output shafts and count the turns.

Thanks a ton. Any clue on which bell to choose? I can get my hands on a proper universal chevy/bop and a 606

F-78/14 is the same height as a 245/60/15, but I understand that in a world use to overdrive ratios it's hard live with 3000 rpm at 60 m.p.h., and i agree. 8)

It's a shame its so hard to find a 2use ratio m22. They all seem to be the cost of a new 5 speed. They sure sound cool.

What power can the m22 hold the m20 can't. You hear all sorts of transmission opinions. Some say the super t10 is stronger than a m22 others say its weaker.

I did find an m22 local with shifter for $800 but its a close ratio.

ok so i am going to stick with trying to find a super t-10. now should i look for the 2.64 first gear or the 2.88. i know the 2.88 will put me about 9.5 total gear for first and the 2.64 nets me around 9.

these are what Richmond lists for gears although i would probably be looking for a factory unit.

The other thing about the St-10 is that "they" say that as the first gear ratio gets bigger, the main case bulges out to accommodate it, thus weakening it. Is this true, I don't know. I run the 3:42 geared unit behind a Pontiac 400 and I have no issues, but then I don't race or abuse it either. I also feel that the proper rear gears go a long way to help the drive train survive by making it easy to accelerate. Any one who has built a strong motor and kept the dead rear gears knows what I mean. It's like going uphill on a bicycle in the wrong gear- torture. That's where the 10 to 1 ratio came from, or as close as you can get.

so which would be better the 2.88 or 2.64? it looks like the 2.88 has a big drop off from 2-3

You may not have much chance to choose your ratio. I think with the state of the ST-10 supply/prices, you will just have to play it by ear and see. If and when you find a decent unit THEN check the ratios and see if it fits into your plans. At least you know that you will be using the 3:42 rear, so that narrows your range of usable gear ratios. I was EXTREMELY lucky to find that 3:42 first gear ST-10 at a swap meet, and for only $250 I couldn't walk away. It had a worn out 3rd gear synchro that I only found out about by driving it, but I bought an overhaul kit at JC Whitney and rebuilt it.

Yeah the prices are crazy. It.seems a new Richmond unit is only a couple hundred mire than a rebuilt unit. And ok seeing core units go in the $800 range.

Then it seems a nice hurst shifter is gonna run me around $300.

On another note I grabbed up a 462606 bellhousing last night
