Pontiac guy hit it on the money. 3.08 and down is the break point 3.23 and up is a 3 series carrier. If it is a Eaton Gov Loc try to get your money back. Low speed locker famous grenading under heavy use.

My car is just an occasional pleasure vehicle, not getting beat on, stock 307. It should work fine for my needs.

Bolt or screw, it uses both names in the parts book. And within 5 lines from each other. One says bolt, one says screw. Same part number. WTF? So maybe that's why the dealership only found it for 8.5?

GM p/n 14056196. Fit's 82-88 B and G body 7.5 and 8.5, and 8.75 factory rear ends, posi or no (the cross shaft makes a difference if it's G80 or not, but apparently not the retaining screw/bolt). Superseded to p/n 25872305. List price is $6.50 from GM.

OG GM part number is 393132 which changed in 1986 to the 14056196.

The screw part goes into the casing. The pin extension has NO bearing on the screw's threaded part. The extension pin goes into a hole in the cross shaft that has a little bit of play in it. The pin sometimes breaks off inside because of this incredibly stupid design, most of the time right at the last thread closest to the cross shaft in my experience. Luckily it was easy to turn out of there with a magnetic tool. PITA either way. It normally doesn't pose any issues until you go to have to work on the rear end. THEN you notice right away when only an inch or so of pin comes out. It doesn't matter about the torque or any of that rot. You don't want it coming loose for sure, but there you go. Maybe that's why GM used to sell them in boxes of 20.

The 8.5 pin is too big, I ordered one from the dealer yesterday.
If it wasn't fitting, you got something different than normal I would imagine. According to the parts books 7.5 Monte Carlos use the same pin as a 8.5 442. Not really understanding why the 8.5 pin would be too big. Of course, this is only from the parts book information. I don't have any real world experience tearing into 7.5 rear gears.

So here is what I got. The 3rd picture is the incorrect shaft that is too big ( for the 8.5). unit has surface rust that I will correct, but its new and unused.

Ah, hell I misread your post. You meant the cross shaft itself. D'oh! I was thinking retainer pin.

Yeah, they're different.

I got one from dorman p/n 81048. It fits. I'm looking for the shaft that this bolt threads into.
