BUILD THREAD 86 GP 2+2~Blown 6.0

Let's go win over more people to rebuild their own. While I'm getting the itch to freshen up my M29, a 4L80 is more realistically the next one going on the bench.

I've got a torn apart 2004r that's been sitting on my work bench since December for my Cutlass so I've got plenty to do!

Drag weekend is in 2 weeks and I'm on a new trans that I need to test

Pro- Track is open for 5pm-dusk street drags tomorrow night

Con- I just got the trans in last week and was busy going to a wedding and finding places to stash car parts at home that were at Mom's, so I blew all labor day weekend.

Packed my go-kit tonight. Brainerd intl. is 2hr 15min away so i've got a drive to and home. Plus it goes dusk at like 730 these days so i've got 2 and half hours to get stuff done. Gotta work early, leave early, get there by 445 to swap tires & tech by 5pm track-go.

Yippie.

I was strictly speaking of seeing how the new box works at 7000 RPM.

Quick pull says yes.

Main goal for the BIR run is to find a track that has decent prep and determine what my launch RPM, clutch slip delay time is & where the front shock settings are happy so the nose comes up but not TOO fast. Last fall the front end came up too fast with the comp eng. 90/10 drag shocks and unloaded the rear end.

I've only got 1 outing on my 4.30 gears anyways and it was on a greasy track so I've got some work to do.

Made the trip to BIR for the years last Wednesday night street legal event. I've lived within 140 miles of BIR for most of my life and have never raced there, and only went to spectate at the street outlaws thing this summer.

They put on a good show and honestly they had more participants racing and spectators than I've ever seen at a street drag let alone on a Wednesday night.

Talked to a Lsa 5th gen and he said the track was good. He was ~660hp and running mid/hi 10's at 126. Usually these street events have little to no prep but despite the street tires being 75% of the cars they put glue down and made it decent.

Also a guy who has a 79 GA stick car that races and had a ton of experience talked to me in the staging lanes and talked through how to cut a better R/T, where I should be doing the burnout and where to set my tire pressure and it helped a lot. Thanks random dude!! I have never had a reaction time with a crap but he told me on what bulb to leave and I got a .058 rt on my last pass. They had a rt 'money' 8 car bracket at the end of the night and it turns out I was like 9 or 10.

So,
Pass #1 I missed 3rd
Pass #2 I spun about 40ft out, cranked my front shocks from 10 compression & 6 rebound to 10 rebound
Pass #3 I did decent
Pass #4 I put 200rpm bore in the 2 step. Mistake, I blitzed the clutch, I need to speed up the clutch apply time to make that work.

I was in the right lane all the night, best of 11.81 at 118.

Big turnout!!

So normally I don't like DA correction but it was hot and humid. I was down 4mph from last month pre trans rebuild.

I don't know what I classify as, mild NA or extensive boost, but it corrects right to 120-122mph which is what it has run. Sour air today.

I also have to review they logs but I only had 55% ethanol and was 2 degrees less timing than last month. DA plus poor fuel does add to the low trap speed.

I'd go back next year, BIR staff ran the cars through, kept it prepped, nobody mega oil downed and stuff was laid out well and made sense.

Put some miles on. Leave home at 230, race from 530-7, change tires and home at 10

No trailer consortium. Wicked low 10 5.0 stang.

Oh and do the wear bars on drag radials mean anything? I've got ~50 passes and near zero street miles and they are just at the wear bars. Tires were new last June.

Congrats. Success definitely achieved 🙂

I've never looked at the DA reading, but probably should. If all of that VooDoo math is correct, then the additional 2 degrees should be close to getting you in the 10's.

The tires are fine. My last set was at the point when I headed off to the only no-prep race I tried on a stone laden track - it destroyed them. But they had a bunch of clean, drag strip runs left in them before that. I think the John Force style burnouts cause more wear than 5 runs down the track.

p.s 'VooDoo math' - hehe
