BUILD THREAD 86 GP 2+2~Blown 6.0

Well my back is back to 95% so time to get back to it!

Pulled the axles out to drill & tap for 5/8 studs and

Well SOB.

Yup, twisted Moser 30 spline...

Passenger side is fine. The lugs aren't as tweaked. Driver's side is ehh??

I turned the tops off the new lug nuts to fit the long studs

So I gotta put a plan together. At this point this 8.5 has broken 2 differentials and 1 set of axles and started to damage this set.

My cutlass needs a replacement for the 7.5. do I put this 8.5 in that and build a Dana60/9" or something for this? Do I just buy new axle shafts for this and put these in the cutlass since it doesn't have the power to twist these?

I can get Custom 33 spline axles for a 8.5 but they only offer spools, no posi type street friendly options.

I think the best answer is put new shafts in this 8.5 and get rid of my tire shake and put these tweaked ones in my cutlass.

It appears that you are shock loading your driveline.

My clutch slipper valve works good, until the tire shakes, and I'm thinking much of this is due to tire shake.

There is no path to becoming a legend without pain, now get your wallet open and feel it in your soul. 🤣

Now, fun question.... Have you checked U-joints, drive shaft and slip yoke yet? You did find all the down stream weak points.....

I prefer my soul and wallet locked down tighter than alcatraz....

I have not checked my U joint, driveshaft or slip yoke, yet.....

Oh, and I remember why I built this 8.5 rear in the first place-

The used 9" market SUCKS. And new stuff, comparable or slightly better to what I have now is $3145 PLUS paint, oil, brake lines, and a driveshaft.....

$3500 to swap to a 9" zoinks.... I think I am throwing axles in this one.....

Psst....

junkyard 8.8......

If I was smarter when I started my adventure....

Summit had $20 off so it hurt 7% less :/ new axles are on the way. I can toss the 1 good leftover axle in my rear I need to build for the Cutlass and $160 for a new drivers axle. Honestly the thing needs a 35 spline axle at this point but, ish!!!

The only advantage I see with a 8.8 is that you can get a truetrac in 33 spline where an 8.5 is 30 spline. And 8.8 goes up to a 35 spline spool where a 8.5 tops out at a 33 spline spool.

People like to talk up 8.8's but from what I can tell an 8.5 is essentially the same at my level. Granted an exploder 8.8 in stock form is better (31 spline 8.8 vs. 28 or 30 for an 8.5, actual clutch posi vs. gov bomb GM) but I threw away all that stuff by this point so.....?

One of the engineering managers at my former employer used to be on the 8.8 team at Ford. He said internally the ford lingo was if it came in a car (mustang/crown vic, 28 spline) it was an 8.5, if it was an explorer with 31 splines it was an 8.8, regardless of of the gears being the same.

I'd toss a spool at 33 spline axles in, but the joy of a multi purpose autocross/drag/street car really dampens my desire to have a spool

I have no solutions only self generated problems lol...
