I did find out something too. Not sure how accurate this is but the 87 and up chimes have a much better diaphragm/speaker thing for the chime. The 86 and below has a foam seal around the disc and if it crumbles (when it crumbles) the chime sounds like crap. So there's that. Apparently the 87-up doesn't need this foam.
I think the reason may be that the 87--88's had the blinker reminder chime? Not sure but they are definitely different.
You win the prize! On page 78-0 of the 87 Cutlass Supreme CSM, it lays out the convenience center purple and red wiring, although they're on opposite sides of the alarm chime, so it sort of fakes you out. Apparently, when you turn the turn signal on, it starts monitoring the VSS system (red wire) and the turn signal (purple wire). When it figures out the car has moved about 1/2 mile with the blinker still on....CHIME TIME!!! No voice that subtly tells you "Hey, dumb shiit, turn off your turn signal."
This was bothering the heck out of me but finally figured out that GM wasn't telling us the whole story on the convenience center page. Probably didn't have enough room.
If you don't have it, it won't see it, but I'm not sure if it's a standard feature thing or what. Doesn't say it's an optional feature, but who knows.
CASE SOLVED!
Edit: The purple and red wire are in the pigtail, but the plug that it supposedly goes into has a purple and brown wire. Go figure. The brown wire is part of the VSS to ECM circuit. So it's not an exact like for like plug in. Talk about stupid. So purple to purple, and red to brown.
