Ok so with my malibu done, i started to drive to work and is kinda going to be a daily/weekend driver...
bare with me i type alot...lol.

Ever since i installed my gauges, and electric fans, i keep track of my gauge and when my fans were suppose to turn on..so with that said im overheating only if im at idle, like at a stop light or just leaving the car on, letting the car get hot.

i dont know if its my gauge or my temp sensor? i did notice that my neddle from my temp gauge with jump to 190 or the line just above 190 with the wave line when i would turn the car on when i let it sit for maybe like 2-3mins..when to me it should stay at the 130 mark and slowly rise as i drive or it stays at idle for maybe a good 10 mins or so..when im driving it will stay at 190 like if thats normal for the gauge to read...so im thinking that my gauge is off juming to 190 thinking its at 130 at fresh crank of the car.hope it make since...lool

Next my fans wont turn on till the car is super hot hitting 260-270 on my gauge which i think is wrong (idk) and radiator fluid starts gushing out of my over flow tank...and the smell of gas like running rich from over heating...
Note: my fans will come on at 260 on my gauge (BUY WHY)?..know with the set up i have they are suppose to turn on at 180 and shut off at 170 or 160, but if my gauge reads at 190 when i run the car for like 2-3 mins then how do i know if my sensors working and turning on the fans at 180 or 260? and why would my gauge run all the way up to 190 after 2-3 mins of the car being at idle.. :blam: get me????

I guess my question is do i have a bad senors? or do i have a bad gauge?? i really want them to turn on and keep my Bu fresh when its suppose to...I had the same set up in my elco and it worked great, turnd on exatcly at 180 on my gauge and tured off at 170 and keeped it cool never had a probelm...just dont want to blow a head gasket...please help!!

heres some pics..

heres when i got to work, i wanted to see where my fans turned on at it was at 260, radiator fluid first then fans turned on

your better off having the temp sensor in the intake. closer to the thermostat. its a more acurrate reading.

I believe the temp sensor for the fans are supposed to be in the radiator if possible. you want them before the thermostat.

A think the gauge problem is due to an air pocket or maybe even because its waiting for the thermostat to open. once it opens its already too hot,

pull the thermostat and see what happens. then maybe move the senors.

ok koo, u mean the thermostat thats in the waterneck? not the one in the intake that screwed in...

yeah. that little guy in the water neck.

you can run the car in the driveway and make sure the water is flowing. wait for the thermostat to open and start checking temps. you can get a decent laser heat gone and start taking some readings.

It looks like you have more then enough fan to cool. even without the shrouds on them.

ok wait, how am i goin to ck for water flow with out fluids flying all over the place? should i just replace it> its new (muarry brand)

As for the sensor, are u takin about the temp sonor that turns on the fans...get a probe sensor and put inbetween the radiator?

is the car hot now or not?

This is what I would do in the order I would do them to trouble shoot where the problem is.

with pressure released from the rad, take off the cap. fill with water if needed. run the car and see if the water is flowing, therm is going to need to get openeded.

Check the gauges and see where you are at. if the temp is getting high. check temp at stat housing, cylinder heads, rad,

see what the temps are. if the stat hasnt opened thats your problem. if the temp is consistant all over then its the sensors.

if the temp guage is reading something different you might have air in the system. its easy to get then in the head, another reason why people put them in the intake.

you can bleed out the system with a burper or as long as the rad cap is the highest point you can run with the cap off and just let the air run threw.

More than likely you have a bad temp sending unit(for the gauge) AND a bad fan temp switch. If it where an air lock problem temp gauge would read cold all the time as ALL temp gauge sending units are not capable of reading an internal engine air temp and can ONLY read a liquid temp that acts on the end of the sensor. By the way, does not really matter if temp sender is in head or in intake. All the OEM's have used their senders in both positions at different times with the same degree of accuracy. As for the fans not coming on you probably have an out of calibration sensor. Only way to check either sensor is to know what the resistance spec should be at a given temp for each sensor and then test. While $60 is an amazing price for such a fan kit, it does lead me to question the quality of its components. I say this because it is not uncommon for fan control switch's alone to be priced $20-$50. BTW. do not run your engine without a t-stat as it will overheat since the coolant will flow too fast through the radiator and not have enough time to transfer its heat to the radiator.

I run my my temp sensor in the drvr side of the head and the thermo switch for the e fans at the pass. Side of the intake. I've yet to have any issue with overheating unless it was a wiring problem created by ME. The air dam plays a major factor in the cooling system and I know you said you had one already. Anyways I'd be looking and you thermostat amd e fan thermoswitch as culprits.
