The third pic you posted gave the full answer. In 81, there were no *5.7 L* engines. They were still *350*'s. So, what you have there is a good ol 91 *5.7 L* engine!

You lucky sh*t you! 1 pc RMS, and it at least has the stands for the oem hyd roller cam. I don't think the trucks had the roller cams till later years. They may not be drilled and a flat tappet cam in it but it's not hard to drill/tap for the factory spider. The rest of the block will be set up for the factory roller cam.

Note: the 1 pc RMS flywheels are differant than the 2 pc RMS motors. Keep this in mind if you have to swap these.

Congrats !!!!!!!!!!!

I meant to mention the whole 5.7 casting but forgot, lol.

On a side note about the cams, I would of almost put money on the trucks(at least the earlier ones) not having the roller cam til a buddy mine had one in his. Although someone else could have put it in.

Re: TPI IN 86 CUTTY

Casting on heads are 14102193. The site says they are 305/350s, 87-95, 1.84/1.5 valves, 58cc. From what I've read on the internet, they suck. They are truck heads I think. So the motor is a 91 with a camaro tpi setup on it? Guess it is the truck cam as well. Probably why he sold me the motor. He was selling that motor cause it didn't have enough power for him and was putting a 454 in instead. Oh well, they will do for now. With this setup, what kind of hp can I expect? Can any vortec head fit this tpi setup?

Hey Clutch, did you use the smog pump eliminator? I bought the Summit item #NAL-10129569 and it didn't come with the groves for the serp belt. If I use this will the belt slip off? or did I get the wrong part?

Nevermind, I see that I need to get a new belt and new routing.

There's a lot of guys that will throw those heads on a 350 to boost the compression with the small chambers. I'm not a big fan of this because I think it hurts the flow too much, it's kind of a trade off, more compression less flow.

However, in this case it may not be a real bad thing. Stock TPI's are known for flowing very well past 4000-4500 at best. So as long as you don't plan to try to spin this thing real high, it may work well.

As for the cam, it's kind of a wild card. I'd just go aftermarket(if budget allows) and stick with something that makes tops out in the power range below 5000 at most. Concentrate on making tourque and it might make enought to keep you happy.

Re: TPI IN 86 CUTTY

Thanx again JRM for the info. You've been a lot of help. I think I'm gonna drop the motor in and see what it feels like. Prob feel like a 454 compared to the 307 in it now. 😀

Re: TPI IN 86 CUTTY

Haha, it just might. Even though it isn't exactly what you thought it was it can still be a pretty good package. Kepp us updated on how it goes.

Re: TPI IN 86 CUTTY

You wold need a differant TPI base (the intake part) to run the Vortec heads. They do make one for this but it's $$$ and doesn't flow any better than a stock base.

As jrm said, TPI runs out of airflow about 4800 rpm. Build as much torque as possible in the 5000 rpm and under area and for a street car, you'll forget all about *horsepower*. You'll have your hands full keeping the tires planted, errr, you WON'T keep the tires planted!

Here's an article about TPI. Granted it's a 383 with a cam bigger than a TPI really needs but you can get an idea of what works well on TPI. http://www.compcams.com/Community/Artic ... 1737510521

If you wanted to swap the cam before you drop it in, I'd suggest the LT4 Hot Cam. Excellant for a 350 and since your block can accept the oem roller, it's cheaper than most other hyd roller's. Yes, it will fit your setup and block.

Then, the shortblock will be ready for any other future upgrades such as better heads, maybe a differant base and runners, porting, etc.

Good lookin. That's what I needed to know....a good foundation for not too much $$$.

Re: TPI IN 86 CUTTY

Installed Dodge Intrepid dual speed fans in preparation for TPI swap. Took advice from other posts and it looks pretty much factory.

Re: TPI IN 86 CUTTY

Received a few goodies today from Summit. I got the A2292 frame mounts, but cannot find the right block mounts for these frame mounts. Please help. Hopefully I can get them from Summit, but can't find em.
