I got the new wires, cleaned the plugs with carb cleaner and a rag.
Put em back in and it kind of ran a bit better but not much of a difference.

I am sorry I am not following set them at 40?
maybe he is talking about the plug gap
 
do a cap an rotor and then replace all your plugs with ac/delco or whatever they originally used in the motor. ive pissed around with cleaning plugs, and now ive realized you can have 2 different sets of plugs and have 2 completely different running engines. anytime ive used bosch, i found the motor would have shitty acceleration but be better at higher rpms, but when i switched back to the plain-jane original ac/delco's, it would run alot better.
